Scope
The Medical Receptionist role is a vital component and first line for a medical organization. This position has the initial contact with a patient via in-person or over the phone communication. The Medical Receptionist sets the tone for the medical visit and plays a key role in making the initial communication positive and welcoming. This role schedules patients, answers questions, processes paperwork, handles copying/scanning/faxing, communicates with other departments, processes payments, coordinates external referrals, completes prior authorization testing, initiates insurance verification, and answers phones in a timely manner.
Requirements
· Proficiency in English and Spanish
· Knowledge of the medical intake process
· Knowledge of basic medical terminology
· An understanding of how to verify medical insurance and how to communicate insurance companies
· Experience with electronic medical record software
· Experience in scheduling appointments
· Experience taking payments
· Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
**HIPAA training will be required during onboarding and once a year following hire**

Essential Functions:
· Answer consumer/patient phone calls
· Answer any questions a patient may have
· Schedule appointments for the patient(s)
· Navigate the phone system via transfers, holds, and messages
· Process payments over the phone
· Input patient information into the EMR accurately
· Verify patient insurance with various third party payers
· Able to explain insurance terms and specific policy details to patient
· Process payments in-person including cash and debit/credit card payments
· Communicate with outside providers for referrals
· Follow up with patients with outstanding bills
· Printing/copying documents, receipts, bills, notices, and patient information
· Scanning documents, receipts, bills, notices, and patient information
· Participate in process improvements for the department & organization
