Your Opportunity:
As the next Media Relations Manager, you will support Covered California's Media Relations activities, such as responding to media inquiries, providing strategic counsel to division and organizational leadership, and developing tactics and approaches to support Covered California announcements and core campaigns, including Open Enrollment. You'll oversee the day-to-day aspects of the organization's Media Relations program, including the development of news releases, advisories, fact sheets, press conferences, speeches, talking points, and media-facing social media content. You will also have the opportunity to join and supervise a collaborative and diverse team of mission-driven communications specialists.
Our ideal candidate has experience developing innovative and data and insight-driven media engagement strategies that are effective in today's media environment. The candidate has at least three years of experience working in journalism, public relations, communications, or marketing, and has demonstrated experience building and fostering a culture of teamwork, trust, and collaboration. Having knowledge of and experience working with/in health insurance and healthcare as well as working in multicultural segments and media is considered a huge plus! Submit your application today!

This position's office headquarters location is designated in Sacramento County. Travel expenses associated with commuting to the employee's office headquarters location are not reimbursable, other than authorized transit subsidies.

Working Conditions

  • This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Covered California's current telework policy. While Covered California supports telework, in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksite with minimal notification if an urgent need arises, as determined by the Department.
  • Employees are no longer required to submit Covered California's Self-Screening Questionnaire prior to coming onsite. Additionally, the State of California COVID-19 Testing Program requirements, along with COVID-19 vaccination verification are no longer needed. Covered California's COVID-19 Prevention Plan has been updated to incorporate the revised CDPH Public Health Officer Orders.

    Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
    • 3+ years working in journalism, public relations, communications, marketing or a related field, with experience managing and leading people and teams.
    • Demonstrated ability contribute to, and foster a culture of teamwork, trust and collaboration
    • Must possess excellent communication and persuasive writing skills, experience writing, editing and producing content for a variety of platforms and channels, including traditional media, social, media and websites
    • Experience in building media engagement strategies and crafting responses to media inquiries; knowledge and relationships with statewide and national reporters a plus
    • Experience in producing media and consumer-facing content, including news releases, advisories, fact sheets, media events, messaging documents, and video and social content
    • Knowledge of, and experience working multicultural markets and media, with a focus on hard-to-reach or hard-to-convince populations; bilingual skills a plus
    • Familiarity reviewing and analyzing first-party and third-party research and data, and translating insights into consumer and media-facing content
    • Experience tracking and analyzing media coverage; familiarity working with media monitoring and analytics tools
    • Ability to serve as a spokesperson on behalf of the organization for media and other public-facing interviews and engagements on an as-needed basis
    • Experience executing campaigns and managing budgets and expenditures
    • Demonstrated ability to work across internal teams and divisions, and foster internal relationships and long-term partnerships
    • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
    • Health insurance and health care experience preferred, but not required
