Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties

Coordinates math and science tutoring area, and assists in recruiting, hiring and training of Learning Success Center math and science tutors, student workers and Peer Academic Mentors (PAMs). Provides leadership and ongoing staff development opportunities for tutors and student employees both during their shifts and outside of scheduled drop-in hours. Establishes and maintains supportive staff-student relationships through direct work with students at multiple service points: Learning & Retention Specialist appointments, LSC drop-in areas, AVID Center, and Student Success Series workshops. Promotes student success and retention through direct individual academic and holistic support, group supports, and referrals.
Essential Duties

  1. Coordinates training of PAMs and other staff who support math and science students concerning best tutoring practices, course concepts, and student awareness.
  2. Assists with recruiting, hiring, training and scheduling of Learning Success Center math and science tutors, student workers and Peer Academic Mentors.
  3. Assesses student needs via intake assessments, learning skills assessments, case notes, and in collaboration with referring faculty and staff.
  4. Discusses students' broader circumstances in context of academic goals and appropriately connects them with relevant campus services.
  5. Performs formal instruction and training of new PAMs as part of ED125 - Tutoring and Instructional Issues course.
  6. Markets math and science support services via class visits and communication with faculty. Attends math department meetings upon the request of instructional dean or as needed to share information on services.
  7. Provides learning strategies coaching and academic support to students in targeted classes and programs, individually and/or in small groups.
  8. Collaborates with instructors to offer their students customized support, including study groups, tracked use of services, and in-class workshops.
  9. Contributes to best practices for student placements and retention through roles on MHCC Councils and Committees.
  10. Presents academic success workshops as requested.
  11. Attends student orientations and campus events to promote AVID|LSC services, make connections with students and faculty, and familiarize with curricula and services.
  12. Collaborates with Student Development and Success staff and leadership team to enhance referral process, improve departmental knowledge of resources, and to develop seminars and orientations for new and returning students.

Additional Duties
  1. Researches, collects and disseminates material to faculty/staff related to learning strategies, learning styles, learning disabilities, and cultural norms that impact learning.
  2. Assists with program development and planning.
  3. Serves on campus committees and work groups focusing on student retention, learner success, instructional support and/or related topics.
  4. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Education: Master's degree in education, adult education, teaching or related field
Experience/Training:
Minimum (3) years of experience working with adult students, including students with learning disabilities or developing basic skills, in a tutoring or teaching one-on-one environment
Experience in instructional design and assessment
Experience working in a diverse, multicultural environmen

Additional Qualifications and/or Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Skills:

  • Assisting students with print and online research.
  • Intermediate (considerable) working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, email, presentation applications and web-based applications in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Beginner (limited) working knowledge of databases.
Ability to:
  • Coach academic literacy, math literacy, and/or study skills.
Knowledge of:
  • Learning theory, adult development and teaching/tutoring methodologies

Working Conditions and Important Information

Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in both an office and classroom environment. The position interacts with a variety of individuals including students or clients who may be emotional and exhibit stressful behavior at times. As directed to meet workload demands, works flexible schedule outside of typical schedule including evening/weekend hours.

Salary:
Initial salary placement will be based on years of relevant full-time equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Handbook or Collective Bargaining Agreement. Please include all relevant full and part-time experience in your application that you want the College to review towards potential placement. Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire.
