Washington County Animal Servicesis hiring aVolunteer Coordinator to recruit, train, support, manage, and grow a team of volunteers while providing important services to the shelter!
Please join us in our mission to provide a safe haven for animals in transition, protect animals from harm, and provide tools to the residents of our County to live safely, responsibly and respectfully with animals. If you have considered creating a career in the public sector within a municipal animal shelter, we believe your talents and passion for animal welfare will bring value to the services we provide in Washington County, Oregon, as well as the collaborative efforts we make with community partners throughout the Portland metropolitan area to ensure that everything we can do to prevent animals from needing our shelter is just as important as providing excellent care and help to the animals that are in our care.
About the Opportunity:
We have an active volunteer program with many dedicated citizens volunteering at least 8 hours a month each to our shelter. In this position, you will help ensure our volunteers are well managed and properly trained; community members and prospective volunteers are communicated with in a prompt and appropriate manner; and the volunteer program and opportunities meet the changing needs of the shelter. You will also have the opportunity to work with other Animal Services staff and the County Emergency Management Team to plan, manage, and respond to animal and pet owners' needs in the event of an emergency that adversely affect the community and Animal Services operations. Additionally, you will perform a variety of administrative, organizational, and record-keeping tasks within Animal Services. After initial training period, this position will receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and will be fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
This position may require occasional weekend and/or evening hours depending on the needs. It is eligible for a hybrid work scheduling including 1-2 days/week working remotely after the initial onboarding and training period.
Who we are looking for:
The ideal candidate will have a background in volunteer recruitment, management, and scheduling, preferably in animal shelter/animal care operations. They will have the skills and ability to work with a diverse community and bring a strong commitment to providing opportunity for people from all walks of life to experience the joy of making a difference in our community animal shelter through volunteer work. They will also have the ability to learn and become proficient in common volunteer management software, various social media platforms, and website management practices. In addition, experience working with disaster response planning and response activities and knowledge of standard emergency management practices would be ideal. Having a certification as a volunteer management professional through a national organization is a plus.
About the Shelter:
Washington County Animal Services, located at the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter, cares for lost animals, finds homes for abandoned pets, licenses dogs, enforces animal cruelty laws, and protects our citizens from dangerous animals. Last year, we provided care for approximately 1,800 animals in our shelter, responded to almost 4,000 animal issues in the community, licensed more than 48,000 dogs, answered over 50,000 phone calls from the public, and did community outreach at schools, fairs, and events. We work closely with other shelters in the area through the Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland, which includes a metropolitan area-wide program that aims to assist low-income families and their cats by offering affordable spay and neuter surgeries to those who qualify. We also work closely with our County, Regional, State, and National partners to address animal and pet owners' needs in emergency events.
