Rare opportunity to join the marketing team for one of the leading Children's Museums in the nation as our Marketing and Communications Manager. Join Port Discovery Children's Museum in downtown Baltimore and manage the marketing, communications, and outreach in a fast-paced, rewarding environment. Help tell the story of how Port Discovery educates and enriches the lives of children and families by helping children learn through playing.

Summary of the Job:

This position will manage and oversee the development and implementation of the marketing strategies and tactics of multiple Museum initiatives with a focus on digital advertising, content development, social media, and program/exhibit promotion supporting the Museum, General Admission and Membership programs.

The position directly supervises the FT Digital Content Specialist and contracted individuals working to support the Marketing department.

This position is expected to work approximately one to two weekend days per month (in rotation with other members of the marketing team).

The salary range for this position is $60k to $70k, based on experience.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Marketing
    • Develop and implement marketing and communications plans, strategies and tactics for Port Discovery, with a primary focus on managing the marketing efforts to support General Admission and Membership visitation and revenue goals.
    • Develop and manage relevant marketing strategies and tactics to increase awareness of and visitation to Port Discovery exhibits, programs, events and other revenue lines.
    • Act as a liaison with hospitality community and represent museum at hospitality functions/meetings (Baltimore Tourism Association, Visit Baltimore, Downtown Partnership, Waterfront Partnerships).
    • Assist with maintaining and preparing suggestions for the Museum's marketing budget, including coding of invoices.
  • Advertising
    • Media Relations Coordinate and manage the museum's digital advertising plans for Facebook, Instagram, Google Search, Google Display and other digital channels, to include coordination of advertising plans for events, programs, exhibits and other revenue lines as needed with Advertising Agency/Vendor(s).
    • Coordinate with the Digital Content Specialist to develop advertising assets, including photos and videos that will be used in digital and traditional advertising.
  • Media Relations
    • Manage media outreach around Museum programs, events and exhibits as needed. Includes development and distribution of media releases, preparing speaking points, coordinating media visits, coordinating media interviews, and speaking on-record/on-camera on behalf of Port Discovery.
    • Manage relationship with outside media consultants.
    • Create and maintain relationships with parent bloggers and online reporters.
  • Email Marketing, Content Development & Website
    • Manage the development/production and distribution of marketing materials supporting marketing and communication efforts for the Museum. Includes writing/promoting content for blogs, email marketing and other outlets that support the Museum in general.
    • Develop and manage the Museum's content marketing program. Includes identifying, coordinating and developing content to assist with Search Engine Optimization, Thought Leadership work, and general marketing of the Museum.
    • Manage the Museum's email marketing program. Includes development of email marketing initiatives and maintenance of the Museum's email database and platform.

Essential Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree required, in marketing, communications, or related field.
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in digital advertising, public relations, marketing, communications, promotions, social media, and/or content engagement.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of management, supervisory and/or team lead experience required.
  • Experience in creative writing/content creation from inception to publication, and the ability to quickly create engaging content for a variety of formats.
  • Experience with paid digital advertising (e.g. Facebook/Instagram, Google, etc.), search engine optimization, and Google Analytics required.
  • Experience with creating and using photography and videography for web, social media.
  • Well organized, ability to multitask and possess excellent time management and follow-up skills, and able to work under tight timelines.
  • Ability to take ownership, prioritize, and efficiently complete tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be willing to work some irregular hours, weekends and/or public holidays.
  • Excellent customer service skills and always portray a professional manner.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Frequent sitting and sedentary office work for normal work duties.
  • Occasional standing & walking throughout the museum, bending and reaching with hands and arms. Use of hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
  • Must be comfortable working around large crowds.
  • The noise level is typically moderate; it can be louder on busier days.
  • Normal working hours for this position are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but 1-2 weekend days per month are required for gathering content.
  • Flexibility is needed for public relations and special events, requiring some evening and weekend work, a few times each month
