Job description

Reporting to the Technical Production Manager of Concert and Ensemble Operations, we are seeking a Assistant Production Manager who will support the event production and lighting needs of the school, both Conservatory and Preparatory. Working as part of a team, this role is responsible for day-to-day operation of performances for both the Conservatory and the Preparatory to produce over 1000 events, including master classes, rehearsals, performances (music, dance, and opera), and student recitals. The Assistant Production Manager will help supervise all aspects of the Institute production activities, but primary duties will be related to day to day managing of the production department, advancing concerts and recitals, and the implementation of technical elements of shows, including lighting, audio, and visual.


The Peabody Assistant Production Manager acts as a liaison among the various individuals involved in a production, including the conductor, artistic directors, musicians, dancers, technical staff, and the concert and ensembles team to ensure an excellent and safe production.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overseeing staffing all recitals and ensemble concerts.
  • Lead weekly Production Meeting to ensure all events are properly staffed and everyone knows what their weekly duties are.
  • Coordinates, oversees, and participates in performance preparation activities such as all lighting, sound, and stage setups for all large load ins, strikes, and changeovers.
  • Maintain calendar with all production specific events, including load ins and strikes.
  • Contributes information for budget management and submits purchase requests for production related inventory to Technical Production Manager.
  • Consult with Production Manager on future planning all department technological and staffing upgrades with a special focus on lighting services in Peabody Venues.
  • Responsible for Production Management of specific large events on an as needed basis.
  • Trains and assists in supervising student crew in space operations, including, but not limited to lighting installation, audio support, and stage management as required.
  • Work with guest designers to ensure proper lighting is available to maintain excellent production quality.
  • Responsible for implementation of lighting for all performances and events in the Peabody Institute's Concert Halls
  • Consult with the Production Manager to make sure the lighting inventory is working and available to achieve proper lighting for all events.
  • Assist the Production Assistants. That may include ensemble setups, as well as Audio/Visual setups.
  • The Assistant Production Manager works to provide a professional and safe performance environment to the Peabody Institute students, faculty, staff, patrons, and guests.
  • Will be responsible to manage several public stage events independently.
  • Performs relevant duties as assigned.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Familiarity with lighting, audio mixing, sound reinforcement, video, stage production, and rigging. Lighting Design background.
  • Knowledge of/background in music production, specifically live orchestra, jazz, and opera.
  • Professional demeanor, comfort in high-pressure situations, adaptable, solutions-oriented problem solver.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with proven ability to effectively prioritize workload.
  • Ability to work long hours and nontraditional shifts: evenings and weekends as appropriate due to performance schedule.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft word, Excel, Outlook, required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, develop and motivate teams.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk, stand, climb for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Technical Theatre, Music, or related field.
  • Two to four years of related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • BFA in theater or related professional experience.
  • Three years of technical theater experience.
  • Experience managing students and small crews.
  • Experience with digital media and video production.
  • Experience with Vectorworks and drafting.
  • Experience with Arts vision.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
