What You Will Achieve
The Manager, Occupational Safety; Project Safety, Facility Commissioning & Prestart will provide strategic and technical leadership, direction and support to large, site critical projects. This position establishes and coordinates the safety program for capital Project Safety including preliminary hazard assessment, design, prestart and commissioning. This role will coach and mentor project managers, engineers and colleagues to ensure new capital projects are delivered with the highest level of safety by design and ensure risk controls are contemporary and in line with Pfizer and industry best practice.
This individual ensures that new projects and facilities established at the Kalamazoo site are compliant with applicable federal, state and local safety regulations, Corporate and Division procedures and standards. This role assists operational leadership with the development, design and delivery of strategy and programs that will ensure the aspiration of an Incident and Injury free site where every colleague, contractor and visitor leave in a healthier state than when they arrived.
How You Will Achieve It
  • Support project teams as a technical expert for key capital projects ensuring the completion of preliminary hazard, design, commissioning and prestart reviews.
  • Ensure best practice / contemporary controls are included into key capital projects.
  • Supports operational leadership to develop appropriate strategy and programs to effectively manage operational safety risk.
  • Work as part of a team of safety professionals to coordinates plant hazard Communication, Confined Space, Hot Work, Fall Protection, Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO), Machine Guarding, Ergonomics, Cranes & Hoists, Incident Investigation, and Safety Training program compliance, as applicable to areas of responsibility, and ensures the maintains required documentation.
  • Develop solutions to a wide range of complex safety problems where complex analysis may be needed.
  • Develops and presents training on safety subjects including orientation and exempt training.
  • Coordinates plant safety programs, initiatives and documentation.
  • Acts as a "consultant", providing advice that ensures the highest level of compliance is achieved.
  • Assists and/or leads safety audits and risk assessments as needed.
  • Supports assigned operational area Safety Committees.
  • Supports assigned operational areas to assess and safely manage change.
  • Supports the process to monitor the completion of actions generated by Project Safety review, risk assessments and incident investigations to ensure effective and timely management of safety risk.
  • Analyze and interpret new regulations and recommends options for the Plant.
  • Develops written procedures and guidance documents in subject areas of Occupational Safety.
  • Provides input to EHS Department budget and capital plan expenditures.
  • Conducts critical investigations resulting in root cause determination and response.
  • Investigations may require the application of new approaches and methods in the field.
  • Presents findings and recommendations to management.
  • Coaches and mentor's junior members of the safety team.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications
Must-Have

  • Applicant must have a High School Diploma (or Equivalent) and 10 years of relevant experience.
  • OR an Associate's degree with 8 years of experience.
  • OR a Bachelor's degree with at least 5 years of experience
  • OR a Master's degree with more than 3 years of experience.
  • OR a PhD with 0+ years of experience.
  • Field experience in the areas of Hazard Communication, Electrical safety, Confined Space, Hot Work, Fall Protection, LOTO, Machine Guarding, Ergonomics, Cranes & Hoists, Incident Investigation, and Safety Training along with regulatory coordination and report preparation.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills are required.
  • Knowledge of the recognition, evaluation and control of hazards in an industrial environment.
  • Proficiency at project management and internal customer management.
  • Success building effective working relationships with departmental leaders such as engineering, manufacturing and quality.
  • Understanding of safety regulatory requirements, specifically OSHA/NFPA standards and conducting regulatory compliance audits.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use mathematics (including basic algebra and statistics).
  • Ability to gather and organize data from multiple sources.
  • Ability to plan and implement projects.

Nice-to-Have
  • At least 10 years of Safety / EHS experience from applicable industrial environments (ie chemical processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, paper milling or heavy industry).
  • CSP, CIH or other EHS related professional certification.
  • Experience working in the PSM governed industries.
  • Working knowledge of GMP and chemistry.
  • Knowledge of MIOSHA rules and regulations.
  • Experience with Six Sigma/Lean Manufacturing.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to perform field observations which could involve walking or standing on uneven terrain, squatting, bending, twisting, turning, and reaching above shoulder height and work in various climates from extreme cold to heat.
  • May require walking, standing, and or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to walk and drive between site facilities.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
  • Standard work schedule, Monday - Friday, days; may infrequently require off-shift and weekend to support activities in line with the production schedule.
  • On call 24/7.

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $93,500.00 to $155,900.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer's Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 12.5% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
