Shift: Shift 1

Work Schedule: 8 Hr (8:00:00 AM - 5:00:00 AM)

Summary:
Under administrative direction of the Senior Director of the Comparative Research Center (CRC) and along with the Associate Director, CRC Operations, provide veterinary care for all animals maintained in the Rush University Medical Center Comparative Research Center and directly coordinate the daily operations of CRC surgery. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:
  • Manages and provides veterinary care for all animals used within RUMC for research, teaching and testing.
  • Advise investigators in the care and treatment of animals in their research projects.
  • Assist investigative staff in project design to provide proper veterinary care for animals while on study.
  • Consult with investigative staff in protocol development involving surgical procedures including specialty procedures and appropriate use of anesthetics and analgesics.
  • Manages the rodent health surveillance program for the CRC.
  • Manages and/or performs complicated surgical procedures and provide postoperative monitoring of the animals.
  • Provide assurance of compliance with all applicable regulations and policies including IACUC governing the use of animals.
  • Manages the daily activities of the Veterinary Technicians as well as their daily work schedules.
  • Assure adherence to standard operating procedures by all veterinary technicians.
  • Coordinate the hiring process of veterinary technicians, and training and education of veterinary technician personnel as well as disciplinary activities of personnel.
  • Manages the annual review activities of veterinary technician personnel.
  • Coordinate billing for CRC surgery and input data into billing database.
  • Enforce Federal, Institutional, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the development and review of general policies and procedures as they relate to daily CRC and surgery operations and provide input to the Senior Director.
  • Participate as a voting member of the IACUC.
  • Provide training and instruction in the care and use of laboratory animals for animal care technicians, research technicians, and investigators. Provide technical assistance when required.
  • Manages special veterinary services such as collection and processing of diagnostic specimens, necropsy services, protocol dictated procedures, etc.
  • Manages the daily maintenance of procedural support areas such as operating rooms, prep rooms, surgeon’s scrub rooms, animal recovery, x-ray, clinical laboratory, necropsy, and procedure rooms.
  • Obtain and maintain membership in Chicago Branch AALAS and attend no less than 3 meetings per year.
  • Attend National AAALAS, ACLAM and/or AVMA Meetings and/or other meetings and training opportunities related to the laboratory animal sciences field.
  • Participate in Institutional training programs as directed.
Other information:
Required Job Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) licensed in the state of Illinois.
  • Completion of a Laboratory Animal Medicine residency or fellowship OR at least 1 year of experience with laboratory animals, the regulations, IACUCs and directing activities of veterinary technicians and animal care technicians.
  • American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine Certification within 3 years.
  • Must be available by cellular telephone during working and non-working hours and to respond when prompted
  • Some experience with an AAALAC-International accredited laboratory animal care and use program preferred.
  • Firm understanding of Animal facility management.
  • Firm understanding of Veterinary medicine.
  • Firm understanding of Animal facility budgetary management.
  • Firm understanding of Animal protocol systems.
  • Firm understanding of IACUC functions.
  • Firm understanding of Animal physiology and behavior.
  • Firm understanding of Animal husbandry and care procedures.
  • Firm understanding of Physical plant and facility equipment systems
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and animal program issues.
  • General computer literacy.
  • Self-starter, ability to work independent of direct oversight.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills

Physical Demands:
This position carries the potential for employee exposure to blood, body fluids, and other potentially infectious materials, chemicals and other hazardous conditions that may pose a potential health risk. Employees are trained and are expected to observe safety procedures, blood-borne pathogen and hazard communication standards, and the Institutional Animal Care and Use program to include:
  • Ability to handle and restrain all species of animals used in the facility.
  • Ability to work in proximity with all species of animals used in the facility.
  • Ability to lift, move and/or place objects of a minimum of 50lbs. in a repeated fashion.
  • Working knowledge of biology, physiology, and behavioral characteristics of each laboratory animal species.
  • Working knowledge of personnel protective methods and devices.
  • No known animal allergies
