Under direct supervision of the departments designated supervisor, performs heavy physical labor in cleaning, maintaining, and performing routine maintenance, installation, and/or repairs at assigned parks, parkways, medians and buildings/ facilities and adjacent grounds; City streets and related infrastructure; residential, commercial, and pedestrian solid waste refuse containers. Performs janitorial work and routine maintenance at City buildings as required.

- Prepares soil for planting.

- Breaks and removes roadway and other surfaces.
- Digs, shovels, loads and hauls a variety of materials.
- Spreads, rakes, floats and rolls asphalt.
- Sprays sealants, fill potholes, and generally maintain paved roadways and alleys.
- Repairs gutters, drains and culverts, curbs and sidewalks, and cleans and removes materials from alley-ways, storm drains, and culverts.
- Performs concrete work, installing and removing forms and finishing surfaces.
- Paints curbs, parking lots, cross-walks, and other items as assigned.
- Assists installing and repairing traffic signs.
- Sweeps, removes debris and performs general clean up work on streets, alley-ways, and adjacent areas following maintenance and/or repair projects, accidents, public events, weather caused blockages
- Cleans maintains, and repairs a variety of refuse containers.
- Drives a truck in the pick up, delivery, and placement of maintained containers.
- Maintains schedules for special pick-ups and alleyway maintenance to cleanup of debris and to permit refuse truck entry and egress.
- Empties pedestrian refuse containers along designated routes.
- Assists in installing cleaning maintaining, repairing, and replacing underground water distribution systems, including mains, services, valves, meters, hydrants, pressure regulators, lift stations, storm drains, and related equipment and facilities.
- Measures cuts, joins and taps steel, cast iron, asbestos cement, copper, and plastic water pipe.
- Operates various motor vehicles.
- Performs routine vehicle and equipment maintenance, and makes vehicle and equipment maintenance and equipment safety checks.
- Operates and maintains a variety of hand operated and powered mechanical equipment used in street, landscape, and general maintenance activities.
- Washes and cleans assigned vehicles.
- Assists other divisions in maintenance work, or serves as temporary relief for other division employees.
- Performs lead direction of an inmate, part-time or community service labor work crew.
- Performs a variety of other duties as assigned.
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of PC's and related software
- Equipment, tools and materials, methods, and techniques used in the maintenance function of the division to which assigned.
- Job safe practices associated with the activities undertaken within the division.
- Use of maintenance hand and power tools and equipment used within the division.
Skilled in:
- Performing general landscaping maintenance, basic building and equipment maintenance and repair work in a variety of craft areas, basic street maintenance and repair, basic repair of underground utilities, janitorial work and heavy labor assistance.
- Reading various utility meters.
- Operating and maintaining specialized tools and equipment, and driving trucks.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Communicating with the public and employees.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Operate a PC and related software
- Maintain effective working relationships with other people
- Physically be present at the worksite to ensure proper staffing levels.
Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be:
- High School Diploma or an equivalent certificate or diploma recognized by the State of California.
- One (1) to Two (2) years of experience in general maintenance work, landscape, and/or janitorial work, preferred.
- Maintain a valid Class C California Driver License with a driving record acceptable to the City.
- Possess or be able to obtain a valid Category B Pesticide Applicator's license within three (3) months of appointment to the classification.
- Must be able to respond to emergency situations during off-hours.
