Solana Beach - The Community
The charming, seaside community of Solana Beach is nestled along the northern coast of San Diego County, and is approximately a 30 minute drive from downtown San Diego. Its main access routes include Interstate 5, Highway 101, Lomas Santa Fe Drive, and Via de la Valle. Our train station is located at 105 N. Cedros Avenue.

The City lives up to its name with temperatures that average 62 degrees in the wintertime and 77 degrees in the summertime. It offers 1.7 miles of coastline for swimming and surfing. Most days you will see locals drop by to watch the sun set at Fletcher Cove. The City is a favorite destination for those looking for eclectic shops, great dining, golfing, nightlife, and nearby hiking.

The Position

Under direct supervision, on an intermittent basis, performs a variety of semi-skilled or unskilled tasks in the maintenance and servicing of City streets, sewers, beaches, parks, trees, facilities, and equipment; performs related duties as required. The position is an entry level temporary position supporting the City's Public Works Department by performing routine semi-skilled or unskilled maintenance and repair tasks in and around the City. Most assignments are performed without detailed instructions as to specific procedures to be followed. The Temporary Maintenance Worker I position is a FLSA non-exempt, hourly position and limited to 1000 hours per fiscal year. No benefits are associated with this position.


Temporary Maintenance Worker I Availability Requirements:
  • Work Hours: 7:00-3:30 Monday- Friday during training period

  • Availability to work some Sundays
The Maintenance Worker I position is a temporary position, and hours worked may not exceed 1000 hours per fiscal year. Position does not offer benefits.

  • Uses power and hand tools to edge, spray, and weed parks, rights-of-ways, and grounds, flower beds, and other landscaped areas; prunes or trims hedges, trees, and shrubs.
  • Assists with cleaning and raking the beaches with a tractor and/or beach cleaner; cleans out fire rings; repairs and maintains showers and drinking fountains.
  • Cleans walks, parking areas, and other areas of leaves and debris; dumps trash cans; cleans rest rooms; performs or assists in routine or preventive maintenance of park and beach facilities.
  • Operates a variety of equipment or vehicles; makes minor repairs such as sharpening blades; performs routine vehicle maintenance and equipment safety inspections.
  • Cleans storm drains and catch basins; replaces and repairs signs; repairs and builds fences; removes graffiti; performs weed abatement tasks.
  • Assists in special projects such as repairing restrooms and fixtures; periodic painting; installing sprinkler systems; equipment set-up and other physical arrangements.
  • Wears protective apparel including goggles, face protector, noise insulators, and safety shoes; sits, stands, walks, kneels, crouches, stoops, squats, twists, climbs, lifts 60 lbs., and pushes or pulls objects up to 100 lbs.; ability to be exposed to inclement weather and conditions including cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, and mechanical and electrical hazards; travels to different sites and locations.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience

One year of experience in grounds, streets, and/or parks maintenance.

Education
High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

Physical Examination and Background Check
Employment offers are conditional based, upon the successful completion of a medical examination which includes drug screening and a Department of Justice background check. Physicals are performed by the City's designated physician at the City's expense.

Tuberculosis (TB) Testing
Candidates selected to work in this position perform work covered under the Aerosol Transmissible Disease Standard (ATD), such as servicing ventilation systems or other equipment reasonably anticipated to contain aerosol transmitted pathogens, they likely have occupational exposures and are specifically covered by the ATD Standard.

Upon hire, candidate must submit a certificate or notice documenting that within the last two years they have been examined and found to be free of communicable tuberculosis (TB). The certificate or notice must be signed by a licensed examining physician or public health agency. If this certificate is not available, candidate will be tested during their pre-employment physical examination process.

California Driver's License
Employees in classifications requiring possession of a valid California driver's license will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice program, which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects the driving record.

Knowledge of:

  • Maintenance methods and techniques to include plants, flowers, and shrubs.
  • Operation and maintenance of tools and equipment used in repair and maintenance activities.

Ability to:

  • Operate power tools and equipment and make minor repairs to equipment.
  • Perform heavy physical labor and lift objects up to 60 pounds.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Repair facilities and operate light equipment.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written directions, work safely and efficiently.
  • Sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, lift 60 lbs., and push or pull objects up to 100 lbs.; ability to be exposed to inclement weather and conditions including cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, and mechanical and electrical hazards; travel to different sites and locations.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Productivity: Incumbents must perform work in an efficient, effective, and timely manner with direct supervision.
  • Mobility: Incumbents require sufficient mobility to work outdoors on a regular basis and in an office setting on an as needed basis. Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, lift 60 lbs., and push or pull objects up to 100 lbs. and sit, stand, walk for prolonged periods.
  • Vision: Vision sufficient to read small print, computer screens, and printed documents, and to operate assigned equipment.
  • Hearing: Incumbents are required to hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
  • Environment: Regular outdoor environment with exposure to outdoor temperature swings. Exposure to dust from atmosphere and volumes of paper; infrequent exposure to extreme heat and humidity in un-air-conditioned facilities; extreme noise working outdoors or at off-site locations; mechanical and electrical hazards of equipment; fumes and odors of burned wiring. Duties may require working varying hours and days. Availability for on-call, or standby 24 hours a day. Most work is performed outdoors and at a number of off-site locations. Work characteristics are both formal and informal; both autonomous and team-oriented; having both routine and variable tasks; with variable pace and pressure.
  • Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in an outdoors and driving. Continuous use of hands, legs, and arms to manipulate tools and equipment; Frequent walking, standing, sitting, side-to-side turning of neck; firm grasp to lift and move tools, equipment; Constant bending and stooping, squatting, reaching at and above shoulder height, pushing/pulling up to 100 Ibs., twisting at waist, upward and downward flexion of neck; lifting of objects weighing up to 60 lbs. Infrequent kneeling.
  • Other factors: Incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.
