Job description

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair tasks throughout the medical center, including the trades of Plumber, Electrician, Carpenter, and Mechanic. Assigned tasks are generally not as technical as major repairs and installations as required by an employee classified in an individual trade.
  • Plumbing: Inspect, install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair various plumbing devices. Examples include but are not limited to; pipe repair & flush meters. Clearing drains and waste lines.
  • Electrical: Inspect, install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair various types of electromechanical devices. Examples include but are not limited to; electrical motors, switches, light bulbs, ballasts, and wall receptacles. Use and interpret readings from various electrical measuring instruments such as amprobes & multimeters.
  • Carpentry: Inspect, install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair various doors, door alignments and hardware (including closers), locking devices, wall hung fixtures, furniture, shelving, acoustical ceiling tiles, wall repair, floor coverings and other miscellaneous items necessary to maintain the facility. Incumbent may at times be required to fabricate from various wood, metal, plastic and laminate products using tools commonly associated with the carpentry trade including but not limited to; tape measures, saws, grinders and sanders.
  • Mechanical: Inspect, install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair various types of mechanical devices including but not limited to; appliances (ex; washers, dryers, stoves, etc.) pumps, compressors, vacuum pumps, ventilation equipment, medical gas service outlets and various mechanical control devices.
  • General Maintenance: Inspect, install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair the following items; filters and belts, floor tiles (vinyl & carpet), plastering, painting, chairs, desks, cabinets, bulletin boards, white boards, pictures, mirrors, clocks, casters on desks, chairs, carts, shelves, paper towel dispensers, soap dispensers, lotion dispensers and sanitizer dispensers.

Work Schedule: 3:30 pm-12:00 am or 12:00 am-8:30 am (Rotating Shifts available and includes weekend)

Physical Requirements: Incumbent may install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair equipment or components from ladders, platforms and scaffolding and in cramped or hard to reach areas. This can require walking long distances, prolonged standing, stooping, bending, and climbing in uncomfortable or tiring positions. Incumbent may be subject to bruises, cuts and scrapes, burns and other minor injuries. Incumbent must be medically able to wear a respirator. The incumbent frequently lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds. He/she occasionally may handle materials and equipment that weighs in excess of 50 lbs.
Work Conditions: The working conditions vary with the environment. It may be inside or outside, and is generally dirty, dusty, greasy, and may be in inclement weather. The incumbent may be assigned to work in areas where certain potentially harmful physical and/or chemical agents are present such as in the research labs. To ensure employee safety and health, personnel protection programs are maintained. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personal protective equipment, and medical surveillance. As part of the medical surveillance programs, the incumbent may be required to take medical examinations to assess his/her medical qualification for duty. Working conditions for the incumbent vary from sensitive patient care areas such as the Marrow Transplant Unit (MTU) to the engineering Shops and to outdoor areas in all weather conditions.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
