This class maintains and repairs City property, equipment, and facilities through the performance of semi-skilled and skilled labor and technical work. Incumbents provide specialized, skilled general maintenance based on assignment to a city department or maintenance function. Incumbents may serve as lead workers or first-level maintenance supervisors over a small crew, typically reporting to a second level maintenance supervisor who oversees multiple crews. Work may include providing lead direction to work crews or teams including establishing schedules and making assignments; reviewing/inspecting work products; training employees; assisting lower-level staff with complex tasks; making performance evaluation recommendations; gathering maintenance data; maintaining and updating databases; maintaining files and records; preparing reports; monitoring maintenance requirements; and making repair recommendations.
Incumbents assigned to hazardous materials oversee crews and perform repairs and maintenance of hazardous chemical metering equipment, boilers, water treatment equipment, and corrosion control chemical dosing equipment.
Incumbents assigned to tree maintenance oversee and perform all functions in the maintenance and removal of trees and limb debris on City property; verify cleanup activities; plant and instruct on the placement and care of trees; instruct on the use of pesticides; and spray trees for disease and insect control.
As assigned, incumbents may serve as a lead worker, assigning work and monitoring work completion. Incumbents may also supervise paraprofessional and support staff including conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and implementing hiring, discipline, and termination procedures.

Leads, performs, and assists in skilled maintenance work in the assigned area including scheduling, assigning work, and performing the more complicated tasks. MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED.
Associate degree preferred.
Five years of progressive experience in the assigned technical field
An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
A valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
Positions in tree maintenance require ISA certification (International Society of Arboriculture) and pesticide certification.
Positions in hazardous materials require certification for handling refrigerants.
