Job Description
Summary:
Fabricates, installs, troubleshoots, repairs, modifies and makes adjustments to mechanical equipment and devices used in production. Assists in general plant equipment maintenance. This may include training of other maintenance or production personnel and assisting in systems support. Ability to train for basic welding and machining and able to read blueprints and schematics.
Responsibilities:
• Performs emergency maintenance and troubleshoots, repairs, modifies and makes adjustments to plant manufacturing equipment.
• Installs, repairs and/or replaces internal and external machine components such as shafts, bearings, gears, pulleys, rolls, couplings and motors.
• Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment malfunctions and makes repairs or adjustments based on that diagnosis by using repair parts, by correcting existing parts, or by innovation to select substitute parts.
• Moves material, equipment and machinery using standard methods of lifting, rigging, hoisting, blocking skidding and rolling
• Performs preventive maintenance tasks, including lubrication of equipment and machinery, following standard procedures as indicated on PM sheets or in equipment manuals. Updates PM’s as required.
• Works with Planner/Scheduler and engineering to make any improvements to equipment through corrective maintenance procedures.
• Assembles, fits and aligns machinery and equipment using precision testing and measuring instruments, such as scales, dial indicators, micrometers, hole gauges, telescope gauges, tramming tools and similar instruments.
• Sets up, operates and maintains shop equipment such as hand tools, wrenches, electric and air-powered portable tools; carpentry tools and machine tools such as grinders, welding, drill presses, saws and similar machine shop equipment; and moving, lifting and hoisting equipment.
• Keeps work area clean and free from hazards, following proper 5S principles.
• Documents and coordinates maintenance activities between maintenance crews by utilizing log books and shift crossover.
• Coordinates with Maintenance Planner/Scheduler for work assignments.
• Provides information to entire maintenance group regarding equipment or compliance issues.
• Updates Production Supervisor on status of repair and further anticipated downtime.
• Is able to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively. Must be able to read, write legibly, understand and communicate effectively in English.
• Attends Maintenance Tier meetings.
• Adheres to all FDA and DEA regulations.
• Completes Shop Work Orders for Corrective Maintenance, Emergency Maintenance and Preventive Maintenance per SOPs and other requirements.
• Makes daily Maintenance Logbook entries, CMMS daily time entry, stock inventory forms, equipment log book entries, updates and revises PMs as needed
• Completes all requirement cGMP training, SOP training and other required legal and HR training
• Perform other related duties and tasks established by plant management as necessary for the effective and efficient conduct of company business.
• Actively wears all required personal protective equipment: uniform/protective clothing, safety glasses, hearing protection, safety shoes, gloves, respirator (when required), etc. Follows specific gowning procedures as required in both FOTs and the mixer and formulating suite.
• Uses safe working methods/procedures at all times to avoid personal injury, injury to co-workers, or damage to company property and reports unsafe working conditions to supervisor immediately.
• Uses appropriate fall protection equipment when required.
Qualifications:
• Must score “M” or higher on the Skilled Craft Test Battery, which consists of (1)Abstract Reasoning, (2) Spatial Relations, (3) Purdue Industrial Math and (4) Bennett Mechanical Comprehension.
• In addition, to be considered for a position as a mechanic at 3M Northridge, the candidate must meet 1 of the 3 following criteria or acceptable combination:
1. Minimum of 3 years proven experience as a mechanic in a manufacturing environment, preferably in the pharmaceutical or a related industry.
2. Evidence of satisfactory completion of a formal accredited two-year minimum, full time post-secondary vocational school training or military training program. These programs must include a minimum equivalent of 2100 hours of classroom and/or hands-on instruction and must be acceptable to 3M.
3. Completion of the 3 year craft trainee program having obtained certified status per the plan and a total of 5 acceptable completions in the following areas:
Skills: 3-4 years in trade or 40 hr classroom
1. Fabrication: Basic fabrication skills e.g. cutting, sheet metal bending, riveting etc.
2. Blue print reading: Basic drafting certificate
3. Hydraulics: Understanding of hydraulic/oil systems
4. Pneumatic: Air cylinders, distribution systems, valves, plumbing
5. Mechanical elements: Bearings, belts, chain drives, sprockets, gearbox, lubrication. etc
6. Welding
7. Machine shop: Basic light machining, i.e. grinders, lathes, mills etc.
8. Electrical: Basic electrical understanding, drives, motors, distribution systems
