Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week.

DEFINITION
Zoo Educators are the core of the Summer Zoo Camp learning experience. Zoo Education Interns are responsible for implementing camper-led scientific and engineering investigations based around real-life scenarios at the zoo. They must have an appreciation for science education and a commitment to conservation and working with children. They should be prepared to learn about current education methods for child-led science investigations, Next Generation Science Standards, and encourage children to make discoveries for themselves. This is a great experience for anyone wanting to go into elementary or middle school education, science education or science-related fields, or environmental education. A love for children is essential and an interest in animals is important.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Zoo Education Intern positions are 25 hours a week, either 7:45 am to 12:45 pm, or 11:30 pm to 4:45 pm, Monday through Friday for the entire summer season: June 10th to August 30th. Education Interns, with the support of Zoo Educators and Instructors, help to implement Zoo Camp's educational programming by facilitating scientific investigations and engineering challenges with campers, establishing norms for scientific investigations and discussions, and to use specific questioning skills to push campers' critical thinking. During the summer, interns create an original Zoo Camp lesson plan for evaluation and feedback.
Education, Experience & Special Requirements
Education, Training and Experience:
Requires training and/or experience equivalent to one semester of college. Prefer previous experience working with kids, especially in a classroom, camp, or afterschool setting.
Special Requirements:
Must have CPR and First Aid training or be willing to get it before camp starts. Must attend camp training days from June 3rd - 6th, exact times TBD.
Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job's responsibilities. Wisconsin's Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 - 111.395, Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record. Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:
Strength to perform average lifting of less than 5 pounds and occasionally over 15 pounds. Body agility and equilibrium for activities including touring and games. Ability to walk 2 or more miles per day. Ability to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, crouch, and crawl. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Ability to use finger, wrist, and hand motions. Ability to see and hear within normal ranges with or without adaptive devices. Ability to speak and be heard.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to learn several programs with pre-set curriculum and set them up with assistance. Ability to uphold Zoo Camp's Behavior Policy. Ability to learn and support the vision of the Education Department and the Henry Vilas Zoo. Demonstrated respect for all animal species. Demonstrated attendance punctuality and reliability. Ability to work with all ages, but especially with children between 4 and 12 years of age. Demonstrated appreciation for science education and a commitment to conservation. Knowledge of relevant safety precautions and practices. Ability to organize and perform necessary duties in the most efficient, effective, and safe manner. Ability to work efficiently and cooperatively with others. Demonstrated reasoning skills and the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and/or diagrammatic form. Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills. Ability to effectively relate with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.
