REPORTS TO: Senior Licensed Boat Captain/Marine Operations Supervisor
JOB SUMMARY: Perform duties as Captain of the MBL Research Vessels, ensure the safety of the vessels, their crew and onboard personnel.
MAJOR DUTIES:
1. Serve as mate or captain as assigned by Senior Boat Captain. As Captain, responsible for the seaman-like operation of the Vessel to ensure its safety and that of all persons on board. Navigate, maintain pilot house watch, operate the radio and other shipboard equipment.
2. Perform duties on deck as necessary depending upon assignment, such as supervision of crew and safety of all persons on board when serving as Acting Captain. Ensure the qualifications of those standing watch or operating equipment. Supervise, train and instruct crew in all areas pertaining to the operation, maintenance of the Vessel, collecting operations, including design and maintenance of collecting equipment.
3. Assist in administration and logistics as required, maintaining ship's operation and collection logs.
4. Perform routine ship maintenance as required on engineering and maintaining electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and structural systems on the Vessels. Maintain fishing and scientific gear.
5. Support the proper collection, care and handling of live marine organisms to avoid unnecessary stress and injury. Recommend purchase of collection equipment.
6. Assist in design, testing and implementation of new equipment and techniques.
7. Assist others in general maintenance of the Marine Resources Center, especially in regard to marine operations and supporting facilities.
8. Perform other duties as required and/or assigned
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Captains license, U.S.C.G., 100 ton, Near Coastal Certification, must be maintained. Broad knowledge of small research vessels and all related equipment. Should be well-versed in mechanical and electrical equipment maintenance and repair. Experience running and maintaining outboard-powered small vessels. Knowledge of local waters. Knowledge of marine life. Will have and maintain current CPR/Advanced First Aid Certification.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
8-10 years experience on vessels of similar size and rigging with a minimum of two years as a captain. Experience collecting and transporting live marine organisms on board ship by methods that promote animal health. Experience in research or educational settings is desirable. Welding and other emergency repair skills helpful.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position is covered by the Hospital Workers East, SEIU 1199. The working environment for this position requires the person to be in excellent physical condition with the ability to lift and carry approximately 75-100 pounds.
