Job Description – Captain
Responsibilities:
· During the pre-season (April 13-30) prepare for and then attend to the annual USCG COI Topside inspection with the goal of no 835s. Should any 835 or worklist items be issued, see to it that they are cleared as quickly and efficiently as possible. Treat CG Inspectors with respect and comply fully with their requests
· During the pre- and post-season periods, you will be expected to work as part of a cohesive marine maintenance team with the other captains and the operations manager to achieve the highest level of vessel maintenance possible throughout the fleet
· Ensure constant and absolute seaworthiness of the vessel during the operating season.
· Perform and/or oversee preventative maintenance of the vessel in accordance with hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal maintenance checklists
· Create and/or amend the above checklists and keep them current and succinct
· Ensure that the vessel is properly fueled, watered, crewed and provisioned for each day’s service
· Be in overall charge of the vessel, crew, passengers, and activities on board the vessel
· Maintain all relevant logs including:
Ship’s Daily Log
Radio Log
Security Log (including required drills, exercises, and training)
Maintenance Log
Safety Equipment Inspection Logs
EPA Vessel General Permit (VGP)- Daily Inspection Log
EPA Incidental Discharge Log
NTVRP Training, Drills, and Exercise Log
· Provide effectual leadership to the crew and passengers in the event of an emergency (Fire, Flooding, Man overboard, Grounding, etc.) and oversee regularly scheduled drills to prepare for these events
· Have thorough and up-to-date knowledge of all current local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to the operation of the vessel with emphasis on USCG Subchapter “K” and “T” boat regulations.
· Communicate effectively with other captains to ensure smooth and effective transitions during change of command. Ensure that all relevant information is passed on and/or received so that the relieving captain has a thorough understanding of the latest operational changes or challenges.
· Maintain ship’s files including equipment manuals, blank forms, ship’s documents, etc. Ensure that irrelevant or obsolete material is removed from the vessel with approval by the Operations Manager
· Maintain bridge environment, orderliness, and cleanliness to the highest standard possible.
· Coordinate narration with USFS Ranger. Provide opening welcome statement, vessel and itinerary orientation, safety announcements, and closing comments. Provide entire cruise narration in the unlikely absence of the ranger.
· Always maintain congenial and cooperative relationships with rangers ensuring that navigation and narration are intricately coordinated to provide the most informative and enjoyable experience to the passengers
· Always maintain impeccable personal hygiene and wear full uniform kept to the highest standard
possible
Minimum Qualifications:
· 100 Ton Master’s License (Inland)
· TWIC
· Marine Radio Operator Permit
· Current First Aid/CPR Certificate
· 2-3 years’ experience in the passenger vessel industry
· Excellent boat handling skills including high-speed Jet-drive catamarans over 120’
· Ability and willingness to run multiple boats with varying characteristics
· Effective interpersonal skills with proven conflict resolution ability
· Ability to maintain a positive and constuctive attitude throughout the season
Desired Qualifications:
· 100 Ton or higher License (Near Coastal)
· Unlimited Radar Observer Endorsement
· 5+ years’ experience in the passenger vessel industry
Work Schedule:
· Pre-season preparation - April 13-30
· Operating season - May 1 through Oct 3
· Post-season shutdown, dry-docks, and winterization – Oct 4-31
Compensation:
· Pre- and post-season: $25.00/hour
· Operating season: Day-rate (DOE)
Note: Day-rate is paid for any 24-hour period (12:01 AM – Midnight) during which a cruise(s) is operated with paying passengers aboard. Typically, each day would consist of one 5-hour cruise with 4 hours preparation/maintenance and 1 hour shutting down and locking up (10-hour workday). Captain is responsible for the vessel and its safety and movements throughout the entire 24 -hour period. This would include moving the vessel to deep water in the event of a Tsunami Warning and remaining until warning is lifted. If more than 1 cruise is necessary during any given day an alternate captain may be provided if available and at the discretion of the Operations Manager.
Physical Demands:
· As required by USCG, a valid Merchant Mariner’s Medical Certificate must be maintained
· Captains are expected to be in overall good physical condition with no debilitating handicaps or dependencies

Pay: $350.00 - $400.00 per day
