Boat Captain

Reporting to the Acquisitions and Quarantine Manager (Exhibit Technician III) the Boat Captain is one of the primary operators of the Virginia Aquarium's 45' research vessel, Ocean Explorer, and 23' center console, Aquarium Connection. This position will be responsible for staff, student, and vessel safety while underway both inshore (bay) and offshore (ocean) during Virginia Aquarium (VAQ) and Virginia Wesleyan University (VWU) cruises. The Boat Captain will operate the vessels for collection and research trips and will operate the following gear: otter trawls, plankton nets, bottom grabs, and other fishing gear. Serves as the primary liaison between the Virginia Aquarium Research and Conservation section and Virginia Wesleyan University to schedule boat trips in conjunction with student/class schedules. Must maintain positive relationships while interacting and working alongside Virginia Wesleyan students and faculty, as well as Virginia Aquarium (VAQ) staff. Assist VAQ staff with collecting and research projects. Train Virginia Aquarium staff and Virginia Wesleyan students on various collecting techniques and associated collecting gear operations. Will help maintain vessels and associated equipment performing the following: safety equipment inspections and checks, oil and filter changes, bottom cleaning and painting, waxing hull, polishing metal and other maintenance tasks. Drive City/Foundation vehicles to trailer boat, purchase supplies, or facilitate repair or service by vendors.
Work schedule is based on need for VWU class trips and VAQ research and collecting trips. Average hours per year is 213.
September through October generally scheduled for 10-15 days for VWU classes. Approximately 6-8 hours per day.
March through May generally scheduled for 10-15 days for VWU classes. Approximately 6-8 hours per day.
Scheduled on an as needed basis for VAQ research and collecting trips and occasional summer class trips for VWU.
Work will take place year-round in varying weather conditions including temperature extremes.
