POSITION SUMMARY
The primary job responsibilities of the Library Assistant include shelving, shifting, and general stacks maintenance of the print and other physical collections.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assists in the planning and implementation of long- and short-term remedies for space constraints in BPL stacks, including shifting, relocation, and weeding, in anticipation of a large collection transfer, In collaboration with the Discovery Services Librarian and Rare Book Curator.
- Shelves library materials in proper order and assists with maintaining the Bishop Payne Library print and physical collections to include the main, periodical, and special collections.
- Conducts RFID shelf reading by scanning with portable barcode reader.
- Performs collections inventory.
- Participates in circulation desk staffing, providing a helpful and welcoming presence to patrons.
- Assists patrons in the use of the online catalog, databases, print collection, and e-resources.
- Scans materials for e-reserve system.
- Participates in library staff meetings when work schedule allows.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the User Services Librarian or Head Librarian.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Competencies:
- Attention to detail, such as maintaining exact order while shifting and moving library materials.
- Effective communication, interpersonal, analytical skills, and ability to work effectively with coworkers, supervisor, and patrons required. Commitment to courteous and effective customer service.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree, preferred.
- Candidates who are currently enrolled in a library science program and have an interest in libraries are encouraged to apply.
Experience:
- Experience working in a library environment preferred.
Required Skills:
- Ability to accurately file alphabetically and numerically according to library classification schemes.
- Ability to use integrated library system and other computer software applications.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Medium, occasionally heavy, physical requirements which may include, sitting, standing, walking, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, climbing, stooping, kneeling crouching, keyboarding, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, visual acuity to perform an activity such as reading and sorting library call numbers; viewing a computer terminal and reading.
- Physical dexterity to reach shelves of various heights, push full carts and lift heavy containers (up to 40 pounds) during a work shift.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
On site in Alexandria, VA, no remote option.
