The Position
Supervision Exercised and Received: Provides training to department volunteers and input regarding their performance and selection. May supervise a branch library in absence of lead personnel. Receives lead direction from assigned management and/or supervisory staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions: The essential functions of the classification may include but are not limited to the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity.
- Processes library materials for circulation and merchandise for display and sale; unpacks boxes and confirms items, affixes bar codes, covers books, applies security strips, inputs data, maintains records and performs related tasks;
- Interacts with patrons to provide information and assistance related to reference materials, library services and events; registers patrons for participation in events; participate in events and programs as assigned; gives tours of library for selected groups of patrons;
- Searches bibliographic records using an online data base; updates bibliographic records and prints labels;
- Performs various clerical duties including, but not limited to, sorting mail and typing correspondence; compiles user statistics; prepares/balances change drawer for circulation desk; performs weekly computer backup;
- Assists in daily operations of the library, including daily opening/closure procedures and notifying security or police of potential security problems;
- Creates flyers and other promotional materials to publicize and promote library programs, activities and services;
- Interacts with vendors to set up orders, accounts, deliveries, product returns and invoicing; maintains applicable files; places book orders following established guidelines; and

Qualifications
Experience and Education Guidelines: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would most likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: High school diploma or certified equivalent (GED).
Experience: Two years of general clerical experience involving customer service contact.
Licenses/Certificates/Other Requirements: Must be willing to work such hours as are necessary to accomplish the job requirements; travel to various branch locations. Classification requires the possession and continued maintenance of a valid class "C" California driver's license.
