The City is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to fill a vacancy in the Adult Services division of the Library. Successful candidates should have knowledge of current library practices, be able to assist the public in locating library information and materials, have a community centered focus, and have experience in designing and providing adult programs.

WHAT WE DO:
Under general direction of assigned supervisor, performs reference work in adult, youth services, or at a branch location. Works evening and weekend shifts as required. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this classification, but may act as lead worker for temporarily assigned employees, or special projects.
The Library Technical Assistant position is an Individual Contributor role that provides individualized customer service, programming, access to resources and information. Their role enables the community to explore and use free and accessible resources to build knowledge for a better life.


NOTE: This is a Part-time (32 hours per week) job class and is benefit eligible.

These duties are a representative example; position assignments may vary depending on the business needs of the department and organization.

This position:

  • Performs reference work in Adult, Youth Services, or at a branch location.
  • Assists patrons with selecting and locating materials, demonstrates proficiency with library computer systems and demonstrates use to the public, including microfilm, computers, databases, and copiers.
  • May conduct workshops and programs for general public and/or aid in various presentation such as story times, book talks, puppetry, and class tours/visits.
  • Acts as liaison with the community, may design public relation materials and publicize services in local media, and solicit, screen, and train volunteers.
  • Maintains in-house statistics, databases and systems and assists with the interlibrary loan process.
  • May aid in selection of books and other media and maintain special collection material.
  • Scope of assigned area will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the department director.
  • Upholds the values of the organization and has strong customer service orientation.
  • Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Ideally, previous library and computer experience; and
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree and specialized training or experience in a subject field with value in reference work.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
  • Current technical/professional knowledge of principles, methods, standards and techniques associated with the scope of work of a recognized profession, such as:
    • Public library role and municipal operations.
    • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Microsoft Office Suite (or equivalent).
    • Use computer and other office equipment effectively.
