General Statement of Duties:
Performs clerical duties necessary for the efficient operation of the Library including basic support services and services to patrons. Provides routine circulation and clerical functions using a computerized integrated library system. Works at the circulation desk assisting library patrons. Performs related work as required or assigned.
Distinguishing Features of the Class:
- Works under the supervision of the Adult and Teen Services Librarian
- Engages in routine circulation operations using a computerized integrated library system (ILS)
- Works directly with the public
- Maintains patron privacy and confidentiality according to library policies
- Explains, interprets and applies library policy
Examples of Work (illustrative only):
- Greets visitors and promotes positive relations with library patrons
- Checks library materials in and out
- Registers new patrons and issues/updates library cards
- Operates standard office equipment
- Collects fines and fees from patrons
- Places items on hold and take requests for new items
- Assists patrons with using library equipment, including photocopier/scanner/fax, printer, and self-check out
- Answers telephones and when necessary routes calls to other departments
- Answers directional and specific title/author questions from patrons
- Refers patrons to appropriate staff for all other questions/requests
- Processes, withdraws, and repairs library materials
- Shelves materials when needed
- Under supervision of department head, assists with weeding and inventory of library collections
- Under supervision of department head, assists with library programs, displays and merchandising of library materials
- Assists with routine opening/closing procedures
- Performs related work as required
Knowledge, Skills and, Abilities
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of standard library principles including freedom of speech, patron confidentiality, and censorship
- Demonstrate an acceptable skill level at using a wide range of office equipment and related software including computers, photocopiers, printers, and other library related equipment
- Demonstrate an acceptable skill level at using a variety of resources including print and non-print materials, Internet sources, and online databases
- Ability to work with patrons of all ages and abilities
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
- Ability to listen carefully, take instructions, and learn procedures quickly
- Excellent customer service and telephone skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing
- Good organizational skills
- Ability to file alphanumerically
- Ability to work alone at the circulation desk when necessary

Physical Expectations
- Must be able to move loaded book carts and lift up to 25 pounds
- Ability to operate and view a computer screen for extended periods of time
- Depth, color, peripheral, and distance vision routinely required
- Ability to hear, talk, walk, sit, bend, reach, and grasp
- Occasional need to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch
- May be required to stand for extended periods of time
- Moderate exposure to noise and dirt/dust
Qualifications for Appointment
- Requires high school diploma or equivalent, college coursework or degree preferred
- Requires a minimum of one year direct customer service work experience
