Legal Intern

SUMMARY: The Dutra Group (“Company”) is seeking one highly motivated and collegial law student to intern with its legal department during the 2024 summer months. This person will perform work as directed and overseen by the Company’s attorneys, under the ultimate supervision of the General Counsel of Operations. This internship will provide the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in a broad array of practice areas related to general corporate operations and the construction industry, for which the overarching mandate is to identify, analyze, and mitigate the Company’s risk. These practice areas may include contracts, labor and employment, corporate formation and maintenance, regulatory compliance, maritime, privacy, tax, insurance, trademarks, and claims / litigation. This person will not only have the opportunity to collaborate with the Company’s attorneys but will also interact with the Company’s internal clients and gain exposure to proceedings with external clients and claimants.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following, though other duties may be assigned:

  • Assist with corporate compliance, which may include identifying applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations that control the Company’s operations; performing internal compliance audits; analyzing and proposing efficient processes, procedures, and policies to produce full compliance; and updating documentation / filing reports.
  • Assist with the Company’s bid/proposal efforts, which may include reviewing the prime contract to assess risk from a legal perspective and advising the stakeholders on favorable and unfavorable terms; reviewing the bid package prior to submission for compliance with the specifications; and supporting the legal team in pursuing or defending against bid protests;
  • Assist with a wide variety of legal research, as assigned, related to the Company’s operations and provide practical, actionable responses (e.g legal memoranda, written communication for internal or external audiences);
  • Assist with reviewing and proposing modifications to the Company’s contracts, which may include NDAs, owner-prime agreements, subcontracts, service and supply agreements, joint ventures, union agreements, rental agreements, and settlement agreements, among others; attend negotiations of those contracts; and ensure all mutually agreed modifications are accurately reflected;
  • Assist with protecting the Company’s economic interests, which may include pursuing or defending against claims and litigation;
  • Assist with maintaining the Company’s trademarks, which may include filing declarations of use and applications for renewal;

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. A successful candidate must also have effective interpersonal and communication skills, as well as a people-oriented and collaborative style that seeks to educate and motivate. This individual must also be proactive, assertive, self-motivated, organized, capable of working under pressure, and able to prioritize. A successful candidate must have a sense of urgency in finding solutions to problems and a commitment to high performance and corporate compliance.

  • Education, Experience, and Interests: Completion of at least one year at an ABA-accredited law school. Interest in the in-house legal environment. Prior background or strong interest in federal contracting and/or construction (preferred but not required).
  • Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents and to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries. Excellent written and oral communication skills, focused on providing clear, actionable guidance tailored to the audience receiving it (e.g. legal vs non-legal).
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to understand and interpret technical instructions in word, mathematical, or diagram form.
  • Computer Skills: Excellent legal research skills (commensurate with level of legal education to date), ability to use legal research software such as Westlaw or Lexis (Company uses Westlaw), and advanced abilities in Microsoft Office software including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Strong keyboarding skills.
  • Physical Presence: Regular and predictable physical presence in the corporate office is an essential qualification for this position due to the need for face-to-face contact and daily interaction with various departments to perform the essential duties of the job.

Pay Range: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour

Categories of Personal Information Dutra Collects and Purpose of Use
Dutra collects and retains job application and employment information for the following general purposes: human resources, employment and benefit administration, and compliance with any local, state, or federal legal obligations. Dutra obtains the categories of PI listed below during the job application process, employee onboarding process, the selection of benefits as an employee, and ongoing employment. In some cases, Dutra may obtain a background check once an offer of employment is made.

Dutra does not sell or disclose PI of job applicants and employees to any third parties, unless required to do so by law.
Dutra collects the following categories of PI for job applicants and employees:

  • Personal identifiers provided in job application process, on-boarding process, and benefit selection process. The purpose of this information is to make employment decisions, verify work authorization status, manage the employment relationship with Dutra, and facilitate employment administration, processing, and maintenance, such as providing benefits to employees and their beneficiaries, processing payroll, and general office administration.
  • Financial information. The purpose of this information is to administer payroll and benefits, process work-related claims, and facilitate all related accounting and auditing.
  • Certain classification and diversity information, such as veteran or military status, age, race, color, national origin, citizenship, marital status, physical or mental

    disability, and sex. The purpose of this information is to comply with local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Personal and work history information provided in application process, and occasionally via a background check.   • Health and safety information that may be relevant to employment and expectations of job duties, and is in accordance with existing local, state, and federal laws. This information includes drug testing, physical injuries, heath conditions, and other physical and mental health concerns.   • Daily health status information directly related to the COVID-19 pandemic. This information is collected upon a visit to any Dutra office or worksite. The information includes the date of office visits, the time of the visit, whether the visitor has obtained a COVID-19 daily check-in health badge, and whether the visitor has passed a temperature screening. The Company may sometimes require an employee or worksite visitor to take a COVID-19 rapid test prior to entering a Company worksite. The purpose of this information is to keep all Company locations as safe as possible and to protect the health of Company employees, their families, and all others that visit the Company’s worksites.

Further Notice Regarding Collection of Personal Information
The Company continues to evaluate its practices and records in relation to the CCPA to ensure compliance with all requirements.
