Title
Lead Medical Lab Assistant
The Lead Medical Laboratory Assistant works in various areas of the support services department performing pre-analytical or post-analytical functions. The Lead Medical Laboratory Assistant will conduct support service department new hire orientation and training. This individual will participate with the support services leadership team in committee meetings, process improvement initiatives and new system implementations. This role will provide input to the Support Services Supervisor and Lead Lab Tech on staff performance matters. The MLA processes samples for testing including centrifugation, aliquoting, storage, and shipping. Also will provide customer service duties by answering all laboratory phone calls. Providing support for the staff who are performing the clinical testing.
Education and Certification qualifications:

• High School Diploma or general education degree (GED) required

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

• 6 months of prior patient care experience in a healthcare environment including computer data entry experience preferred. Formal training in phlebotomy or basic Medical Laboratory functions may substitute for the 6 months of prior patient care experience.
• 2 years of phlebotomy or laboratory experience in healthcare environment (including computer data entry experience.)

Role and Responsibilities

• Facilitates training and orientation of new hires
• Participates in on-going training and education of MLAs
• Works in the specimen processing area when training new hires and when the schedule dictates
• Ensures staff adheres to laboratory's policies and procedures for labeling, handling, processing, storage and transportation of specimens
• Provides input on performance matters of MLAs
• Key contributions in staff meetings and training meetings for support services team
• Proficient in the use of laboratory information system
• Demonstrates exceptional customer service skills to provide service recovery where appropriate.
• Knowledge of basic mathematics and medical terminology. Must demonstrate excellent human relation skills, including verbal and written communication and problem solving skills.
• Report laboratory results to clients and patients using established protocols
• Document call history in required format and maintain complete and accurate records
• Report client concerns using established protocols
• Leads by example in demonstrating "Standards for Excellence" behaviors.

Working Conditions

• Must follow laboratory safety policies and procedures due to potential for occupational exposure to infectious materials, including but not limited to: blood and other potentially infectious materials.
• Work in an environment with some exposure to noxious fumes and unpleasant noises.
• Work in an environment with risk of sustaining illness and injury from the use of chemicals and biological materials and organisms.
• In rare extreme circumstances, employee could experience the following:
• Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to personal computer between 40-70 percent of the time.
• Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (20lbs or less), and assisting with heavier tasks as necessary.
• Working conditions could include minor straining, fatiguing positions, physical motions, etc.
