Attention all writers. Do you love kids and have experience in early childhood education? Are you excited by the idea of helping young children express themselves and explore their world through creative writing and storytelling? Writopia Lab, an award-winning 501(c)3 nonprofit that runs writing workshops for kids ages 7 to 18, and Language Play workshops for ages 4 to 6, is looking for Language Play Instructors for our Upper West Side location.
Since its formation in New York City in 2007, Writopia Lab has grown into a nationwide community of young writers. Our mission is to foster joy, literacy, and critical thinking in children and teens from all backgrounds through creative writing. We create a safe and engaging space for kids and teens at all stages of the writing process, and we aim to provide the creative inspiration, individual attention, and intellectual environment that may not be available to them at school.
What Language Play Instructors Do
Language play Instructors lead after-school and weekend workshops and private sessions for young writers ages 4 to 6. Workshops are semester-long and meet after school and on weekends for 90 minute sessions. Our workshops utilize collaborative games and activities to help children grow as storytellers and communicators. Our workshops are both fun and productive, and guide children as they develop their vocabulary, grow their critical thinking, and feel confident and joyful as storytellers and writers.
Requirements & Skills
Schedule, Location, and Pay
During the school year, instructors generally work 5 to 10 hours per week. Instructors will work primarily in-person at our Upper West Side location. We are currently only hiring Language Play instructors with Friday availability.
Hourly Pay: $25-$40 per hour for instructing; $16 per hour for administrative tasks. Most hours will be paid at the instructing rate.

Requirements & Skills
- Bachelor's Degree; Master's preferred
- Experience in early childhood education
- Published fiction and/or nonfiction and/or produced plays preferred
- Enthusiasm for and experience working with youth
- Ability to reliably and consistently commute to workshop locations
- Flexibility instructing in various environments
- Must be fully vaccinated against COVID 19 including at least one booster
