Analytical, organic, inorganic and environmental chemistry, biochemistry, bacteriology, and microbiology sufficient to learn to perform and interpret tests on water and wastewater.
Examples of Work Performed

Performs tests such as dissolved oxygen content, residual chlorine content, turbidity, and total or suspended solids.Performs tests using usual equipment such as ampermetric titrator, microscopes, culture plates, etc., on water and wastewater.Collects samples of water at specified locations and on a routine schedule; maintains sample integrity.At the site of collection, e.g. river, treatment plant, pumping station, etc., performs routine analysis, which do not require certification.Immediately notifies appropriate personnel of abnormal test results.Performs quality control procedures on equipment and materials to insure proper and accurate functions.Performs routine equipment maintenance such as cleaning, basic repairs, replacement of parts, and basic adjustments.Performs record keeping activities such as entering test data results in logs and forms and compiles test results for submission to supervisor. When appropriate enter results in a LIMS database.Prepares special broths, solutions, reagents, agars, medias, etc.Maintains work area in a clean and organized environment and cleans glassware.Working knowledge of current safety policies, instructions for proper usage, and other procedures and professional practices required for completing job duties.Identifies unsafe practices and conditions and brings such matters to the attention of the crew leader or supervisor.Drives automobile to collection sites.Inventories stock of supplies and equipment.Performs duties on an "as needed" basis or as assigned which are outside sphere of usual assignments such as attending meetings, giving tours, etc.Assists higher level staff, technicians, and supervisors in performing tests, gathering and recording information or proofreading.Assists in orientation and training of new employees and students.Operates a computer terminal to enter and retrieve data for recordkeeping or research
Each applicant must have thirty-two semester hours of science or engineering courses with sixteen semester hours of coursework in chemistry, biology, environmental engineering, environmental science, or other related laboratory sciences from a technical institute, college, or university.
