Job Description

Identifies and analyzes fire hazards. Oversees proper installation and maintenance of fire detection, fire suppression, and fire communication systems. Upgrades fire hazard systems and equipment to be more effective. Resolves fire code deficiencies. Performs tasks related to the overall management and operations of facilities and infrastructure equipment, maintenance, repair, and construction. Trains and obtains qualifications in the analysis of fire hazards, mitigation of fire damage through proper facility design, and installation/maintenance of fire systems. Performs engineering evaluations and collaborates on projects related to Fire Protection of facilities.

In addition, the successful candidate may perform review of building modifications/new construction design for code compliance and system compatibility and provide technical support through system acceptance and building occupancy.


All positions at the Kesselring Site includes participation in the Site's Emergency Response Organization.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field; or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with the design or maintenance of one or more Fire Protection systems, such as: Detection and notification systems, Water-based suppression systems, Chemical or gaseous suppression systems for special hazards, or Passive barriers and means of egress
  • Experience with the development of engineering documents (e.g. engineering analysis, technical specifications, functional requirements, cost estimates, maintenance requirements, engineering drawings, etc.)
  • Familiarity interpreting regulatory codes and standards such as International Building Code or International Fire Code, Building or Fire Code of New York State, or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes, such as National Electrical Code

Pay Range

$61,000 - $93,400 annually

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets.
