Job description

Overview
The Computing and Information Technology Directorate works to re-imagine how digital technologies can simplify the research experience, enable data-driven insights for decision makers, and accelerate PNNL's research missions. CIT helps connect staff to systems while enabling a broader research computing ecosystem to improve productivity and provide a sense of community.
We are looking for a Linux Systems Administrator with a strong understanding and experience with systems administration, networking, system virtualization, cloud computing, backups, Linux OS, network storage, and associated hardware platforms to join PNNL, working in a dynamic, fast-paced and complex heterogeneous technical environment.
This position will maintain, upgrade, and provide support for PNNL's back-end systems and networks. The Linux System Administrator needs to be able to diagnose and resolve problems quickly, should be able to communicate technical concerns and solutions to many different people with varying degrees of technical knowledge as well as work with individuals in all departments to help solve their technical issues.
Responsibilities
  • Applies engineering and technical principles to the design and development of computer networks, cyber security infrastructure, telecommunications, information technology systems and tools, and database systems.
  • Analyzes, installs, integrates, modifies, and supports all associated systems, networks, software, and databases.
  • Plans and conducts projects after analysis of functional and operational requirements.
  • May consult with and lead cross-functional teams.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • MS/MA -OR-
  • PhD

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Educational requirements, certifications/licensures, subject matter expertise, and experience that exceed the Performance Level Indicators
  • Experience in system administration with RHEL/Ubuntu/AWS Linux
  • Experience with Linux system monitoring and task management.
  • Experience with authentication schemes that support Linux
  • Demonstrated Python/PowerShell experience deploying Infrastructure services as code (IaC)
  • Experience delivering projects via Agile methodologies.
  • Experience running Satellite and Landscape servers.
  • IT Infrastructure experience in an enterprise setting, including demonstrated O&M experience (Linux/Unix based applications, backup/recovery strategies, advanced troubleshooting, patching, hardening, etc.)
  • Experience with Ansible/Terraform IT Automation tools.
    Nice to have:
  • AWS / Azure / GCP experience
  • Automated Microsoft ARC/Defender and Nessus deployment experience
  • Support of GPU and other scientific hardware

HSPD-12 PIV Credential Requirement
In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
Mandatory Requirements
Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a "country of risk" without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle.
