The primary assignments of the student are performing microstructure characterization and micromechanical testing of ion-irradiated tungsten heavy alloys. The student will use an electron microscope to image irradiation defects, such as helium bubbles, precipitates, and dislocation loops, and subsequently analyze the size the spatial distribution of the defects. The student will correlate the defect microstructure with the mechanical properties obtained from the micromechanical testing. Additional assignments may include helping to prepare TEM specimens and defect analysis in nano-structured ferritic alloys. The student is expected to perform high-quality research that is suitable for publications in peer-reviewed journals.
