Looking for a summer intern to obtain some hand-on experience in our Optical Shop. Optical Polishing Technicians are responsible for the grinding and polishing of crystal and precision non-linear optical components to required tolerances using defined production procedures. Optical Polishing Technicians are responsible for the grinding and polishing of crystal and precision non-linear optical components to required tolerances using defined production procedures.
Essential Duties (New skills after training)
Education & Experience
Currently enrolled in an accredited degree program pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or other Engineering/Engineering Technology degrees.
Experienced with Microsoft Office (POWERPOINT, WORD, EXCEL).
Skills
Desired Skills:
-Candidates with experience utilizing Design of Experiments, hands on testing, data collection/analysis and technical communication.
-Candidates with experience of precision machining concepts (optical or other) and metrology tools including interferometry, profilometry, etc. (Hands on Experience preferred).
-Candidates with experience utilizing SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software (PRO-E, CATIA, NX Siemens, etc.) for design, GD&T, and drawing creation/interpretation.
-Candidates with robotics/automation specialization will have experience in Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Human Machine Interface (HMI), and robotic automation.
-Candidates with thin film coating specialization will have experience that can range from design, manufacturing, and metrology of optical thin film coatings. Other experiences desired includes vacuum systems, physical vapor deposition, sputtering systems, and advanced plasma sources.
-Candidates with photolithography/microfabrication specialization will have experience in photolithography, and/or associated metrology (coat/develop tracks, spinners, aligners, direct write, steppers, ellipsometry, white light interferometry, etc).
-Candidates with programming/data specialization will have experience in data pipeline, data parsing, and database (SQL).

Optical Polishing Technicians are responsible for the grinding and polishing of crystal and precision non-linear optical components to required tolerances using defined production procedures.
Essential Duties (New skills after training)
- Sets up and operate grinders and polishers for crystal component fabrication.
- Performs basic maintenance / upkeep of polishing and grinding equipment.
- Analyzes components to verify adherence to specifications (good quality parts)
- Determine if product performance is fully compliant to a drawing or specification (good quality)
- Keeps accurate and real-time records of test, measurements, and process improvements.
- Follows process documentation and safety procedures.
- Determine corrective actions for defects in optical polishing.
Education & Experience
