Job Summary

Support and implement scientific, technical, and educational programs for the institute on the vessels and in the laboratory. Assist and support aquarium life support systems. Assist the Captain and crew by providing materials, supplies, equipment, and related logistical support to upper and lower division laboratory courses for college and university field trips on board the research vessel as well as research endeavors on the vessels. Under the direction of the Director, this position assists with coordinating the Research Vessel Yellowfin (scheduling, staffing, quotes and billing) and other educational and scientific programs and projects at the facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Vessel support for education and research.
  • Assist with animal husbandry and aquaria seawater system maintenance.
  • Coordinate the administrative tasks for the CSU Marine Biology Semester on Catalina.
  • Assist with administrative tasks coordinating the Research Vessel Yellowfin (scheduling, staffing, quotes and billing) and other educational and scientific programs and projects at the facility.
  • Coordinate and promote scientific programs on the R/V Yellowfin and at the Southern California Marine Institute via social media and website.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge and experience working on marine vessels and with marine equipment. Knowledge and experience of seawater aquarium systems and animal husbandry. Knowledge and experience with working and engaging with large groups. Knowledge of administrative systems.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline required.
  • Bachelor of Arts Degree in Marine Biology, Oceanography or associated science preferred.
  • Teaching experience preferred.
  • Boating experience preferred.

Physical Summary

Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.

Licenses / Certificates

  • Driver license
  • Certification in First Aid/CPR/AED
  • MOTC small boating certificate
  • Forklift Certification
  • Seabird Training for oceanographic instrumentation

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,815 - $6,620 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
