Salary: $63,750-$76,500

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

As a team member under direct/indirect supervision, leading with education for our stakeholders, performs specialized fire prevention duties associated with new and existing types of occupancies and construction.  The inspector verifies compliance and enforces local, state, and federal fire prevention standards, codes, laws, and ordinances.  In addition, the inspector may conduct or assist with public education, annual fire inspection, code enforcement plan review, fire prevention methods and control, develop prevention programs and implement in the community.  Ability to acquire and maintain state and national certification.  Inspector must be able to attend annual and unscheduled training located in Colorado as well as at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:

           

  • Provide information to applicants and the general public regarding various permit processes and the specific requirements for fire protection systems and fire code regulations.
  • Ability to meet training demands to include out-of-state trainings as well as local training throughout the year.
  • Check and review building plans prior to issuance of permits; review construction and permit documents in relation to fire prevention laws and codes.
  • Conduct inspections and re-inspections on new and existing commercial, industrial, and other buildings for fire hazards, for business license compliance, to issue permits, warnings, and order notices. Interpret and explain fire codes and regulations to contractors, home, and business owners.
  • Conduct acceptance test of alarms, extinguishers, and other fire protection systems and equipment.
  • Ability to assist with defensible space and burn permit inspections.
  • Perform follow up assessment to verify compliance with fire prevention codes and applicable local, state and federal statutes. Conduct enforcement work as necessary.
  • Receive and investigate complaints regarding fire code violations; recommend corrective actions.
  • Prepare written documents, such as fire inspection reports, summaries for hazardous material operators, business correspondence, and drafts of Fire Prevention policies and procedures. Document violations of laws, ordinances, and safety hazards and communicate with the customer for resolution of the violations.  Maintain computer and written records in order to track information.
  • Assist with public education programs by conducting fire prevention and life-safety classes for schools, community groups, contractors, architects, and media relations, etc., as well as provide training for fire personnel on fire and building codes and commercial inspection practices.
  • Aid in the investigation of fire scenes to determine causes and damages.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate familiarization with the Leadership Manual and the Employment Policies Manual.
  • May appear in court regarding fire inspection.
  • Perform maintenance of building and grounds to ensure they are kept clean, safe, stocked, and regularly checked.
  • Attend regular training sessions to learn, renew and practice fire prevention methods. This can involve air travel and being away for up to 1 week on multiple occasions per year.
  • Willingly perform other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

No prior experience is required for this position.

Formal Education:

Must possess a High School diploma or G.E.D., as a minimum educational requirement.  Associate degree preferred

Certificate or licenses:

  • ICC Certification Inspector I - or ability to obtain within 6 Months.
  • CO State Inspector I - or ability to obtain within 6 Months.
  • ICC Certified Inspector II - or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • CO State Inspector II - or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • Possess a High School Diploma/GED or higher: and/or possess equivalent certifications in fire protection system-related courses.
  • ICS 100, ICS 200, FEMA IS700 and IS800 within 6 Months
  • Professional conduct while handling multiple tasks.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Microsoft Teams, and PowerPoint preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication with the ability to speak, read, and write the English    Ability to speak conversation Spanish is desired.
  • Must be able to lawfully work in the United States.
  • Ability to be insured for driving by Summit Fire and EMS’s insurance carrier.
  • CPR and AED certification required, or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire.

 

 

PHYSICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Physical requirements

Strength – Mobility to move to and from various points within the facilities as well as mobility within the outdoor environment; Ability to lift and/or carry 50 lbs. Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, crawl, squat, push, pull, climb, pinch, grip, reach over head and reach away from body.  Ability to produce information in written form.

Auditory – Ability to understand and follow oral instructions in the English language. 

Verbal – Ability to participate in routine conversation in person or via telephone in the English language.

Visual – Must be able to distinguish circumstances / situations, written materials and other details concerning facilities and emergent scenes from distances both near and far.

Environmental conditions

The Inspector’s work involves office and field work. Work requires field visits to construction and development sites outdoors and in existing buildings. While inspecting a field site, working conditions will vary according to the nature of the site. Inspection work involves exposure to weather conditions, which may include slippery surfaces. Inspection work requires the ability to maneuver at construction sites and perform thorough non-structural and fire system inspections.
