Duties

Customer Service 35%
  • Receives and directs patients, answers routine inquires and makes referrals .
  • Determines nature of inquiry and independently responds to all administrative questions.
  • Furnishes information to visitors and others requesting information, guidance, or referral for special assistance.
  • Assists patient in contacting volunteer or social services as needed.
  • Receives and responds to a number of inquiries from patients concerning a variety of medical personnel and administrative matters
  • Positions patients for desired results and cushions and shields patients as appropriate.
  • Independently positions patients for a variety of difficult invasive procedures.
  • Operates and maintains medical instruments and equipment for diagnostic and treatment procedures.
  • Performs or assists triage staff with diagnostic procedures including EKGs, venipunctures, and alcohol breathalyzer used to diagnose medical conditions.
  • Sets equipment parameters based on the patient's diagnosis or specific and/or individualized testing criteria.
  • Makes precise adjustments to clarify readings and measurements.
  • Assists in the performance of or independently performs procedures such as insertion of urinary catheters, intravenous catheters, and naso-gastric tubes, and administration of enemas and breathing treatments as delegated by the RN.
  • During procedures, recognizes abnormalities, collects and records information and informs professional staff of unusual readings or conditions.
Patient Safety 25%
  • Performs a range of diagnostic support duties such as taking, recording, and reporting deviations in vital signs, taking specimens, labeling specimens for the laboratory.
  • Arranges and passes medical instruments and materials to the professional for a variety of diagnostic tests and procedures.
  • Makes gross visual observations and identifies subtle changes in the patient's condition.
  • Monitors patients for adverse reactions and takes corrective action based on established policy.
  • Assists the RN in transporting patients to and from various departments such as radiology, cardiology or to the assigned floor by gurney, wheelchair, or assistance with ambulation.
  • Connects patient to transportation monitors and disconnects them from Spacelab monitoring equipment; sets up portable oxygen tanks.
  • Instructs patients in crutch, walker and or cane use and ensures correct fitting of equipment.

Quality Technical/Efficiency 25%
  • Performs patient care procedures such as collection of specimens, applying dressings, and adjusting supportive equipment.
  • Performs procedures such as collection of blood samples or other fluid samples, application of sterile dressings to wounds, irrigations, or similar patient care.
  • Uses proper sterile technique for collection of samples. Verifies correct labeling and patient identification.
  • Teaches patients and family members the necessity of continuing proper health care.
  • Performs a variety of receptionist and record keeping duties.
  • Records vital signs and documents in CPRS according to policy.
  • Receives visitors, answers the telephone, and refers calls to appropriate staff.
  • Communicates in a tactful and courteous manner with a wide variety of individuals, with varying levels of understanding.
  • Uses software to produce specific printouts for the clinical staff.
  • Assembles patients' records in the CPRS.
  • Files individual documents or information in records.
  • Performs patient charting using standard medical terminology entering information regarding care rendered, condition and progress.
  • Assembles records in proper sequence ensuring that all necessary forms and documents are present, accurate and complete.
Non-Critical Elements 15%
  • orders and maintains supplies for the unit.
  • Maintains order examination rooms.
  • Sets up and maintains sterility of instruments and supplies used to perform tests or procedures in the ER setting.
  • Maintains stock of supplies for unit operations.
Work Schedule: 11:00am-11:30pm and 3:00pm-11:30pm (6-12 hour shifts and 1-8 hour shift in pay period)

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting and carrying; Heavy carrying ; straight pulling; pushing; reaching above shoulder; both hands required; walking; standing; repeated bending. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and must don protective clothing during patient care. The incumbent must be flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual employee health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
GS-05 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Experience where you applied knowledge of quantity food service operations, proper nutrition, food items and appropriate quantities; working with clients, patients, and/or, customers to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; use computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work.
OR
Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-05 level. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to this position (i.e. nutrition, dietary therapy, food and nutrition science, food service systems management, etc.). This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.

To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05.
