This position serves as a Hazardous WasteFacility/Air Quality Compliance Inspector, determining facility compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, and policies that pertain to the Environmental Affairs Bureau of Environmental Health Services Pee Dee-Florence in the Hazardous Waste and Air Programs, in support of DHEC's vision: Healthy people living in healthy communities.
Job Functions:- Implements the Hazardous Waste compliance program in accordance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
- Implements all assigned air monitoring/sampling activities in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), programmatic guidance, and state and federal laws and regulations.
- Serves as the regional Environmental Response Coordinator (ERC).
- Serves on the Regional Environmental Response Team
- Conducts complaint investigations as assigned and in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), programmatic guidance, state and federal laws and regulations.
- Provides technical assistance and consultation to industries and the general public on state and federal Hazardous Waste regulations and standards.
- Assists with training staff on these duties tasks as required.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in a related technical field;
- OR an associate degree in a related technical field and at least one (1) year of Environmental Health or related experience;
- OR a high school diploma or GED, and at least three (3) years of Environmental Health or related experience.

- May require:
- Daily travel throughout the state.
- Occasional overnight travel.
- Participation on the Environmental Response Team and is subject to on call or call back 24/7.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Hazardous Waste Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Experience and/or knowledge of Hazardous Waste state and federal laws and regulations.
- Familiarity with air monitoring and sampling Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Experience and/or knowledge of air monitoring state and federal laws and regulations.
- Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Additional Comments
This position is part of the South Carolina Department of Environmental Control’s
Bureau of Environmental Health Service. The work performed supports DHEC’s mission to improve the quality of life for all South Carolinians by protecting and promoting the health of the public and the environment. Effective July 1, 2024, this position will transfer to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services created by Senate Bill 399 which provides for the creation of the Department of Environmental Services to assume the environmental-related functions of DHEC.
