Job Description Summary

The Global Process Safety Leader is responsible for the Process Safety Management (PSM)/High Hazard (HH) program for BD manufacturing facilities worldwide. This person is accountable for the implementation, management, and continuous improvement of the PSM/HH program, including creating and maintaining policies, requirements, standards, procedures, tools and templates to structurally implement and continuously improve Process Safety. This will also include supporting BD sites globally in PSM/HH execution including training, participating in hazard studies and project reviews, and conducting PSM/HH compliance audits.
He/she also will enhance operational excellence and best practices through knowledge sharing, process optimization, and implementation of PSM/HH elements in partnership with the Business Unit (BU) EHS Leaders. This Global Process Safety Leader will also be a member of the Global Property Protection team bringing functional expertise to review FM Global audits. This role collaborates and participates on the Corporate EHS Audit team as needed. The position is a member of the Central EHS team and reports directly to the Director, Environmental Compliance and Audits.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and technical assistance in the field of PSM/HH.

  • In partnership with the BU EHS leaders, assist sites in developing a comprehensive and strategic approach to the effective process of the BD PSM/HH Program that includes and is not limited to: Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) execution and follow-up to ensure timely closeout of findings; Hazard and Operability (HazOp) study, and effective implementation of PSM/HH program elements.

  • Work closely with site Engineering teams, Sterilization Team, EHS, Operations and other departments to drive PSM/HH programs.

  • Maintain, own and update as needed the Corporate PSM/HH Standard(s). Write policies and procedures as needed.

  • Conduct PSM/HH audits and manage consultants participating in the audits. Support sites with the closure of audit findings.

  • Develop and implement key performance indicators (leading and lagging) to track the progress of the BD PSM/HH program.

  • Lead the PSM/HH network where key metrics are tracked, training is cascaded, and best practices are shared to elevate the awareness and knowledge globally.

  • Interface with regulatory agencies as it relates to PSM/HH, as needed.

  • Ensure PHA/HazOp participants (or other facilitators) are appropriately trained. Coach and support individuals on the methodologies, tools, and practices used to conduct PHAs/HazOps and Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA).  Review results of PHAs/HazOps and LOPA for quality and thoroughness.

  • Develop and provide training on PSM program elements and effectively rollout implementation.

  • Provide a level of oversight on incident investigations and root cause analysis related to PSM/HH  incidents. Develop PSM/HH Corporate Safety alerts when applicable to ensure learnings are shared across BD.

  • As needed, provide one on one support to sites with PSM/HH programs.

  • Evaluate new processes and modified existing processes and facilities. Leads/facilitates PHA/hazard evaluations of each phase of a large project or a new process as applicable.

  • Participate on the Global Property Protection team (GPPT); provide feedback and guidance on project reviews; partner with Corporate Risk, our insurance carrier, and site management to close inspection findings related to the PSM/HH processes.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • 20 to 30% travel requirements.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, essential in dealing with people at all levels and in a variety of functions including technical staff, business team leaders, union personnel and be able to influence and motivate others to quickly achieve results, good training skills.

  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, procedures, and legislative process.

  • Excellent communication skills, personal rapport and motivation are required to effectively coach internal staff and work with outside groups and agencies engaged in Process Safety; experience in applying technology through teamwork.

  • Ability to work in a diverse team environment including interactions with technical staff, operation leaders, and contract personnel.

  • Ability to challenge the organization in a manner that maintains trust and respect.

  • Ability to build business partnerships across and between functional groups and lead a project or technical team.

  • Ability to accept and respond to changes and challenges in a positive manner.

  • Demonstrated capability to analyze problems and provide accurate solutions.

  • Demonstrated skills in time management and balancing multiple priorities.

  • Strong technical writing skills.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or other engineering discipline required.

  • Master’s degree or safety certification(s) preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of seven years of experience implementing and managing programs in a PSM/HH regulated environment.

  • Experience in a PSM/HH environment and leading PSM/HH programs.

  • Experience in fire loss and prevention activities including involvement with insurance carrier.

  • Experience in auditing PSM/HH programs.

  • Experience in working in PSM/HH in a multi-national environment.
