This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.

Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/08/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). You must meet the basic requirement and additional Specialized Experience and/or Education in order to qualify for this position.
Basic Requirement:
A. Degree in geology plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. A combination of education (course work as shown in A above) plus appropriate experience or additional education. Acceptable experience may have been gained through geological field or laboratory work that provided a means of obtaining professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of geology and closely related sciences, e.g., geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrology. Such work generally must have involved making close observations, taking samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, assembling geologic data from source materials, and analyzing and reporting findings orally and in writing. Experience that involved only one phase of geology work, e.g., collecting samples, would not be acceptable as providing the required professional knowledge of the theory and principles of geology. In some situations, professional scientific experience in other fields may be accepted in part as professional geological experience. Such experience must have been preceded by appropriate education in geology or by professional geological experience and must have contributed directly and significantly to the applicant's professional geological competence. Examples include some positions in geophysics, mining engineering, soils science, physical oceanography, hydrology, climatology, biology, analytic or experimental chemistry, metallurgy, and comparable fields where the normal duties or results of investigations have been extended to the solution of geologic problems by the applicant. Ordinary functions of positions such as seismic, computer, petroleum, or mining engineer, mine superintendent, or metallurgist generally are not considered professional geological experience. To receive credit for geological experience obtained in positions that are not full-time professional geological positions, the applicant is responsible for indicating clearly the actual time or percentage of time devoted to geologic duties within such positions, and for giving adequate descriptions of the geologic functions. You must include hours per week worked.

Specialized Experience/Education:
A. One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience for this position include: provide paleontological program support and professional advice; participate as a professional member of a research team; provide technical assistance and serve as a subject matter expert in the conduct of research studies; plan or participate in the planning of paleontological resource projects or studies; research, develop, and prepare manuscripts for professional publications.

Some of the duties you will perform will include, but are not limited to:
- Applies scientific principles and resource management practices consistent with National Park Service regulations, policies, and laws for non-renewable paleontological resources. Planning and implementation of activities are undertaken for both in situ paleontological resources within a geologic context and for fossil specimens maintained in museum collections.
- Plans and coordinates paleontological resource inventory and monitoring activities to compile baseline paleontological resource data related to the scope, significance, distribution (both geospatial and temporal) and the management issues associated with National Park Service fossils. Additionally, monitoring of paleontological resources should focus on assessing the stability and condition of in situ fossils.
- Advocates for stewardship of non-renewable paleontological resources through 1) assessing potential resource threats; 2) ensure scientific research permits address relevant research topics with appropriate conditions and limitations defined in the permit; and 3) safeguard that all park planning, and projects consider and mitigate potential impacts to park fossils.
- Prepares or contributes technically authoritative reports on paleontology and related studies consistent with National Park Service policy and practices. Maintains sensitive paleontological resource information as restricted access to ensure the protection of non-renewable fossil locality information.
- Develops, monitors, and manages project plans that outline the scope, schedule, and/or budget of assigned projects.
