What is a Gas & Mechanical Engineer?
A Gas & Mechanical Engineer performs assignments related to the planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and compliance of our natural gas systems with required codes and standards, innovation and modernization at the forefront.
What does a Gas & Mechanical Engineer do?
Typical assignments could include, but not be limited to:
- Managing capital construction projects and programs
- Developing gas system modernization plans and automation schemes
- Enhancing and automating natural gas safety and compliance processes
- Analyzing and optimizing inspection and maintenance of the gas transmission and distribution system
- Overseeing research and development projects to improve the efficiency and environmental footprint of the natural gas system
- Developing and updating gas construction standards, pipe joining manuals, and operations and maintenance procedures
- Designing and troubleshooting natural gas pipeline corrosion prevention systems
- Performing gas system simulations and models and developing solutions to enhance operations
- Designing and managing construction of gas regulator stations and transmission facilities
- Interfacing with Department of Public Service Staff regarding Central Hudson’s gas system activities
- Providing support for storm or gas emergency restoration efforts
What does it take to be a Gas & Mechanical Engineer?
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to learn new computer software programs quickly
- Must be available to respond to gas and electric emergencies outside of normal business hours as required
- Must perform all tasks safely and design with safety in mind
- Dedication to continuous improvement and initiative to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment
- Flexibility to multitask and operate under pressure in a fast-paced work environment
- Well-developed written/verbal communication skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with innovation in mind
- Strong analytical, organizational and quantitative skills
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred:
- Field of study in mechanical, civil or electrical engineering
- Experience working in the regulated utility industry

Pay range: $78,900 – $187,600
