The MD&A Corporate Engineering team is seeking an Entry LevelGas Turbine Thermal& Fluid Dynamics Modeling Engineer to assist the thermal performance and combustion engineering teams with 1-D flow network modeling for turbine secondary flows, fuel, and other systems. This will be a central and critical role in MD&A’s fast growing Gas Turbine parts and services divisions.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aeronautical Engineering with emphasis in thermodynamics, Fluid Dynamics, and heat transfer.
- Experience with computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software.
- Fundamental knowledge of power generation and turbomachinery including Gas Turbines, compressors, steam turbines, generators, and/or jet engines.
- Fundamental knowledge of manufacturing and repair processes such as welding, machining, brazing, coatings, etc.
Desired Skills:
- Master of Science or Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering or Aeronautical Engineering.
- Detailed knowledge of power generation and turbomachinery including Gas Turbines, compressors, steam turbines, generators, and/or jet engines.
- Computer Aided Design (CAD) modeling experience strongly desired.
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience strongly desired.
- Desire to obtain and maintain a professional engineering (PE) license.
- Working knowledge of ANSYS CFD/Fluent and AxSTREAM design software or other related modeling software strongly desired.
- Knowledge of combustion, gaseous fuels, compressible flow, emissions
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Learning and Modeling of fluid flow/heat transfer of Gas Turbine primary and secondary flows in 1D, 2D, and 3D will be a daily part of this Entry Level role.
- Reverse engineering of Gas Turbine hardware and creation of Gas Turbine primary and secondary flow modeling for various turbine models and combustion systems.
- Understanding of or ability to utilize engineering flow/heat transfer software to build full Gas Turbine frame models along with sub systems to determine performance impacts of MD&A hardware refurbishments and upgrades for steady state and transient conditions.
- Work with MD&A performance and combustion engineering to create and validate models for various Gas Turbine frames.
- Compare modeling results to operational data for validation.
- Support Gas Turbine related Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigation, developing and running models to help troubleshoot unit emission or performance issues.
Relevant Experience: 0-3 years of experience utilizing CFD or 1-D flow networking model and simulation software. Aero/thermal modeling experience of rotating equipment/machinery a plus. Passion for learning new software and modeling Gas Turbine flow networks in ANSYS CFD and AxSTREAM design Software.
Skills: Fluid dynamics, heat transfer, thermodynamic analytical and modeling skills, technical writing, Microsoft Office, public speaking/presentations, people skills including effective communication.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to travel domestically up to 20%.
- Ability to pass a drug test.
- Obtain a TWIC card.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Self-starter and ability to work and learn independently.
- Ability to occasionally work in an industrial environment.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Training & Support:
- MD&A will provide internal training for construction and operation of Gas Turbines, steam turbines, and performance fundamentals.
- Modeling and computational training will be provided by the software developer.
- Mentoring under a licensed PE for credited experience towards obtaining a PE license.
