Position: Part-Time Fund Development Consultant (15-20 Hours/Week)

We treat depression among women of all ages in Africa, where access to mental health treatment is extremely limited.
Since its start in 2014, StrongMinds has treated over 500,000 women with depression in Uganda and Zambia. StrongMinds has earned an impressive reputation in the global mental health space. In addition to media coverage in the New York Times, Forbes and the BBC, we are described by Founders Pledge as the most cost-effective mental health organization working in the developing world.
In 2022, StrongMinds launched its unique program in New Jersey with ambitious plans to expand to many other locations in the US in the following years.
Position Description:
The Fund Development Consultant is a part-time, temporary role that will support the new program StrongMinds America (SMA) as it expands. The individual will work closely with SMA’s Managing Director (MD) and other senior staff to research and solicit support for the program in NJ/US. The ideal candidate will possess an entrepreneurial spirit and the demonstrated ability to raise funds across a variety of sources including foundations, corporations, and individual donors. Experience with mental health is appreciated. Familiarity with the funding landscape in NJ and/or Metro NYC is strongly preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Proactively perform prospect research on institutions, foundations and high net worth individuals and identify potential fit between donor funding priorities and SMA programs and services.
- Identify new Fund Development opportunities and work with the MD and the Development Team to develop a pipeline of prospective donors to help fuel the US program growth.
- Identify and qualify a portfolio of individual and family foundation donors with the capacity to give $10,000 - $100,000+.
- Inform and lead efforts to build a committed Board of Advisors.
- Maintain prospects database and robust pipelines of new potential funders and regularly inform relevant team members of potential grant opportunities, mission alignment and eligibility requirements.
- Ensure that proposal submissions comply with the requirements of each funder, working across a broad range of donors and award amounts.
- Support grant management activities, including documenting and communicating reporting requirements to ensure compliance with all grant reporting as required by donors.
- Prepare briefing memos and other materials that aid the organization’s management team donor engagement.
- Any other duties as assigned to help advance StrongMinds’ fundraising strategy and organizational priorities.
Desired Skills and Experience:
- Advanced degree and strong knowledge of and familiarity with the funding landscape in New Jersey and/or New York.
- Strong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals and reports.
- A clear understanding of StrongMind America’s mission and ability to convey strategy.
- Strong research skills – ability to synthesize research and draw insights from data to craft compelling narratives.
- Ability to handle competing priorities and meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proactive approach to identifying opportunities for improvement and removing barriers/problem solving to deliver results.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:
Location: The Fund Development Consultant will be remote with some planned trips for staff meetings and team trainings in the StrongMinds’ office in Maplewood, NJ.
