Free People, Temporary Assistant Designer - Free-est

Overview
Free People Free-est Assistant Designer's primary responsibility is to facilitate and support the development process of private label product for Free People, Free-est, our beach inspired casual lifestyle and swim category. This role works in collaboration and support of the designer to design and source product appropriate to the Free People target customer. 6 Month Contract with potential to extend.
Responsibilities
- Support seasonal development calendar in partnership with designer/buyers/technical designers/production.
- Execute specific design development projects as assigned by the designer.
- Prepare development packages and participate in all communication and follow up related to each package in partnership with the Design Coordinator. Responsible for updating category styles in web PDM.
- Manage development and execution of trim and artwork packages.
- Set up spec sheets for all bodies. Communicate fit and construction details to Technical Design department. Complete all technical sketches for domestic and overseas programs.
- Maintain an active role in the weekly Design Flow Meeting. Take notes and follow up on all outstanding issues.
- Sketching and CAD via Adobe Illustrator
- Additional tasks in support of the Design team as needed.
Skills
- Strong Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Creative Suite Programs
- Strong hand sketching
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the desire and ability to effectively collaborate with your team and cross functional partners.
- Strong presentation skills
- Interpersonal skills to work successfully in a team environment.
- High level or creativity to respond to business objectives with creative, innovative, and cost-effective design solutions.
- Ability to recognize and accurately forecast fashion and cultural trends as they relate to the Free People target customer.
Qualifications
- Strong understanding of the Free People customer and ability to speak to the brand's handwriting and DNA.
- 1-2 years professional design experience in swim, knits or woven categories perferred
- Entry level technical knowledge of woven/knit and swim apparel construction
- Some working knowledge of fabrics, trims and fabric treatments as well as wash and dye techniques
- Understanding of or some previous exposure to manufacturing techniques and processes
- Some experience researching and reporting on industry trend direction, color direction, and fabric innovations approximately 9-12 months ahead of season
- Experience clearly communicating both verbally and in written form internally and with external partners
- Design portfolio demonstrating aesthetic and skill aligning to the brand and role requirements
Education
Bachelor Degree in Fashion Design preferred
