This, essential, safety-sensitive position is a front-line provider of labor services in performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of the Town of Parker's urban forest, Open Space, trails, medians, and building grounds.
Examples of Essential Duties
Ensures the Town's urban forest, Open Space, and trails are maintained in excellent condition.
Performs front-line, day-to day labor services in any combination of the following areas:
  • Forestry
  • Open space
  • Trails
  • Special Events
  • Snow Removal

Participates in a rotation program through multiple properties, ensuring broadened skill development and effective and efficient coverage.
Participates in snow removal of town parking lots, trails, sidewalks, residential streets, and other areas as assigned.
Participates in setup, teardown, and cleanup of various special events, to include tents, tables, chairs, and other event-related materials.
Occasionally required to work irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, and/or during emergency situations.
Occasionally required to assist others within the Parks, Forestry and Open Space Division.
As part of a rotation, carries an emergency pager and responds to emergency calls as necessary.
Services and maintains assigned equipment and makes minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on related equipment such as checking/servicing fuel, oil, and coolant levels; tire pressure and general appearance; takes necessary steps to bring equipment up to operating standards; prepares and maintains usage records.
Complies with and ensures compliance with all Town policies and procedures and all divisional rules and regulations.
The following non-exhaustive list of Essential Duties and Responsibilities may be performed in/on, the town urban forest, medians, Open Space, and building grounds:
Urban Forestry Maintenance Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs all aspects of care for trees and shrubs, including maintenance, removal, design, ID, ordering, planting, and pesticide application.
Open Space Maintenance Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs all aspects of care to include trash clean up and maintenance, general/ light construction (ex. fencing), mowing, vegetation and weed control, pest control, erosion control and pesticide application.
Trail Maintenance Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs all aspects of trail care to include, trash clean up and maintenance, mowing, vegetation and weed control, pest control, trimming, sweeping, amenity installation and care and pesticide application.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
Attends training as determined necessary to maintain certifications and competence.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Forestry & Open Space Technician III may serve as Assistant Town Forester as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Technician I-
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Possession of or the ability to readily obtain a valid Driver's License, issued by the State of Colorado for the type of vehicle operated; safe driving record and a minimum of 2 years of driving history.
  • This is an entry-level position within the Parks, Forestry and Open Space Division's technician series. This position is distinguished from the Technician II by the performance of limited and routine tasks and duties assigned. The Technician I is typically used as a training platform with employees having only limited or no directly related work experience.
  • This level requires knowledge and competent demonstration of the following within 6 (six) months of hire:
    • Tree inventory, Open Space, and trail locations
    • Fundamental and basic Open Space and trail maintenance
    • Effective communication
  • This level requires the following certifications be obtained within one (1) year of hire:
    • Current CPR/ First Aid, AED
    • Flagger Certification
  • Technician II-
    • 2 (two) years of experience in forestry maintenance operations.
    • This is a mid-level position within the Parks, Forestry and Open Space Division's technician series. This position is distinguished from the Technician I by the performance of the full range of tasks and duties assigned. The Technician II receives only occasional instruction or assistance and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies associated with the Division. Positions at this level are flexibly staffed and are typically filled through advancement from the Technician I level, or when filled from the outside, have prior experience, and meet all qualifications.
    • This level requires knowledge and competent demonstration of the following within 6 (six) months of hire:
      • Tree inventory, Open Space, and trail locations
      • Moderate knowledge of Open Space and trail maintenance
      • Effective communication
      • Moderate knowledge of routine and basic tree maintenance techniques
      • Basic knowledge and ability to climb
      • Ability to perform most daily tasks independently
  • This level requires the following certifications be initiated within 6 (six) months of hire, and obtained within 1 (one) year of hire:
    • Class B CDL with tanker endorsement and air brakes
    • Flagger Certification
    • Current CPR/ First Aid, AED
  • This level requires the following certification be initiated within 1 year of hire, and obtained within 18 (eighteen) months of hire:
    • Certified Operator Colorado Pesticide Applicators License in Turf, Ornamental, and Right of Way
  • Technician III-
    • Four (4) years of experience in forestry maintenance operations, including two (2) years of snow removal experience.
    • This is an upper-level position within the Parks, Forestry and Open Space Division's technician series. This position is distinguished from the Technician II by years of experience, additional licenses and certifications and the performance of the full range of tasks, duties, and specialty assignments. The Technician III receives only limited instruction or assistance and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies associated with the Division. Positions at this level are flexibly staffed and are typically filled through advancement from the Technician II level, or when filled from the outside, have prior experience, and meet all qualifications.
    • This level requires knowledge and competent demonstration of the following within 6 (six) months of hire:
      • Tree inventory, Open Space, and trail locations
      • Advanced knowledge of Open Space and trail maintenance
      • Effective communication
      • Moderate knowledge and ability to climb
      • Advanced tree maintenance techniques
      • Ability to perform all daily assignments independently
  • This level requires the following certifications be initiated within 6 (six) months of hire, and obtained within 1 (one) year of hire:
    • Class B CDL with tanker endorsement and air brakes
    • Flagger Certification
    • Current CPR/ First Aid, AED
  • This level requires the following certification and training be initiated within 1 (one) year of hire and obtained within 18 (eighteen) months of hire.
    • Valid Colorado Department of Agriculture Qualified Supervisor Pesticide Applicator's License in Turf, Ornamental, and Right of Way
    • NIMS Certified in 100
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience to provide for the following knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
    NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
    Knowledge of equipment, materials, techniques, and supplies used in the maintenance of trees and Open Space, including tree and plant identification, knowledge of proper tree and shrub pruning and removal techniques.
    Knowledge of computers and various software programs for communication, data entry and task tracking.
    Knowledge and understanding of best practices, techniques and safety utilized in forestry and Open Space management.
    Knowledge of climbing techniques, equipment, and standards.
    Skill in verbal and written communication.
    Ability to operate and maintain heavy, landscape, and construction equipment, such as mowers, backhoes, tractors, compressors, dump trucks, bucket trucks and woodchipper.
    Ability to operate and maintain small/light equipment, such as weed eaters, blowers, shovels, rakes, shop equipment and power tools.
    Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
    Ability to cooperatively work with other Town Departments, agencies, organizations, and individuals.
    Ability to understand and practice safety and best practices at the line level.
    Ability to assist in all areas of the Forestry and Open Space section.
    WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
    Hand tools, various electric and gas-operated tools and equipment used in the maintenance and operation of forestry and Open Space including, but not limited to, various trucks, bucket trucks, woodchippers, chain saws, climbing equipment, tractors, loaders, backhoes, trenchers, snow removal equipment, first aid equipment and other equipment as assigned. Computers and associated software.
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, use hands and fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, and controls. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, sit, stand on a ladder; pinch or grip objects; talk and hear. Also, must have the ability to operate a vehicle. The employee must routinely lift, carry, push, or pull lighter objects, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally carry, pull, push or lift more than 100 pounds with assistance.
    The employee must communicate clearly and effectively; must understand and be understood. Must be able to frequently engage in ordinary or telephone conversations with speech and hearing.
    Employee must be able to consistently see with near and far acuity, depth perception, color vision and field vision. Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision acuity, night vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust his or her focus, allowing a broad field of vision.

    Hiring range: $22.43 - $26.36
    Full salary range: $22.43 - $30.28
    Forestry & Open Space Technician II:
    Hiring range: $24.23 - $28.46
    Full salary range: $24.23 - $32.70

    Hiring range: $25.62 - $30.74
    Full salary range: $25.62 - $35.87
