General Summary



Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled operations in the maintenance, upkeep, restoration, and construction of Open Space (OS) properties, trail systems, and facilities.

The hours will be 6:00am- 2:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Essential Functions

The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
  • Responsible for the daily maintenance and operations of all Open Space properties in the City of Lafayette including but not limited to:
    • A multi-surfaced trail system, trail shoulders, bridges, and erosion control devices
    • Trailheads, restrooms, and additional Open Space facilities
    • Trash removal, asset inspection, and hazard identification.
    • Vehicle and equipment routine inspection and maintenance
    • Mowing, trimming, tree pruning, seeding, general vegetative management.
    • Natural ecosystem and habitat stewardship, rangeland management
  • Work with Superintendent to create site-specific workplans and implement maintenance and restoration projects in natural areas.
  • Conduct high-level ecological monitoring and data collection to inform management practices.
  • Identify and address safety hazards within public access areas including removal of abandoned encampments on Open Space properties.
  • Ability to load trailer, and safely operate various all-terrain vehicles and heavy equipment in order to perform essential job functions.
  • Administer the Open Space Division’s Integrated Pest Management Plan. Ability to identify invasive and noxious weed populations, while applying a multi-faceted control strategy implementing cultural, biological, mechanical and chemical treatments
  • Train and supervise the activities of seasonal and temporary personnel as assigned, including instruction, safety training and daily direction; assist in the recruitment of staff members assign work to employees; evaluate performance and provide coaching to improve performance as required; maintain open channels of communication and provide employees with information on policies.
  • Assist Open Space Superintendent in carrying out volunteer days and outreach events.
  • Resolve administrative concerns by applying appropriate policies and procedures and through positive interaction and involvement with superiors, other staff members, and the public; prepare and maintain logs and records concerning the application of pesticides and the maintenance and repair of assets, machinery, equipment, and facilities.
  • Interact with the public and Open Space patrons in the field providing a resource; cultivate the ability to address and respond to comments and questions regarding Open Space concerns.
  • Willingness to perform physical tasks outdoors in a variety of weather conditions; understand and carry out oral and written assignments; establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other city employees and the public.
  • Perform related work as required and assigned.

Typical Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of construction practices and tools for general repair of barns or other Open Space structures, various styles of fencing, restroom facilities, water control devices, erosion control devices, etc. Thorough understanding of local ecosystem functions and regionally native/invasive or noxious flora and fauna. General knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, traditional and agriculture irrigation, basic mechanics, traditional and organic agriculture practices.
ABILLITY: Ability to work on many projects at one time, flexible, strong prioritizing ability, and the willingness to provide professional service to internal and external partners. Solid understanding of local ecosystems, local flora and fauna, Horticulture, Arboriculture, erosion control, and proper storm-water management practices. Ability to work within multiagency and multidiscipline teams.
Open Space Maintenance Technician I
EDUCATION: HS diploma or equivalent required or will consider equivalent combinations of training and experience that provide evidence that the applicant/employee possess the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum One (1) year experience in Open Space and natural resource maintenance.
Open Space Maintenance Technician II
EDUCATION:High school diploma or equivalency required; Associate degree in Natural Resource Management or closely related field is preferred.
TRAINING:Specialized training is a required condition of employment these requirements are for the beginning level but must be maintained for the balance of the levels:

  • Storm Water Training (must obtain within first year)
  • Complete pesticide technician training (must obtain within first 12 months and keep current)
EXPERIENCE: Two years in Maintenance Tech position or working at the technician level in Open Space or Natural Resource Management, Candidates should have a strong foundation in natural resource management in one or more of the following areas: wildlife management, forestry, rangeland management, ecology, or similar disciplines.
To be eligible for Maintenance Tech II, employees will need to demonstrate the ability to:
  • Administer the Open Space Divisions Integrated Pest Management Plan. Capable of identifying invasive/noxious weed populations, while applying a multi-faceted control strategy implementing Cultural, Biological, Mechanical and Chemical treatments.
  • Storm Water Certification (current) Minimum overall successful rating on yearly performance appraisal.
Candidates must also meet or obtain 2 of the following criteria for advancement to Maintenance Tech II:
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in Open Space and trail maintenance or closely related field.
  • Certified Equipment Operator (Intermediate Skill level on Front End Loader, Backhoe, Excavator, and Utility Tractor)
  • Pesticide Applicator License Certified Operator – Licensee must hold General plus 1 category minimum from the following: (Right-of-Way 109, Outdoor Vertebrate 302, and Rangeland 107)
  • EPA Watershed Academy: Completion of the 15 Core Modules required to achieve the Federal Watershed Academy Certification
(VOC)Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado Stewardship Training Program
  • Outdoor Stewardship Institute Crew Leadership for Trails
  • Introduction to Trail Design
  • Ecological Restoration Skills and Leadership Training
  • Independent Stewardship for Trails
