In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (GS-07):
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) Controlling and extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards. (3) Conducting inspections of facilities/buildings, alarms, and detection and/or suppression systems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (GS-08):
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) Experience detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; (2) Conducting inspections of facilities/buildings, alarms, and detection and/or suppression systems. (3) Providing firefighting training to include structural, ARFF, fire prevention and/or hazardous material to personnel within an organization. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess the Selective Placement Factor certificates listed below.
Selective Placement Factors: Incumbent must meet and maintain all required certifications in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M "DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program" (F&ESCP) dated January 22, 2020. Certifications through the DoD, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), and National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications "Pro Board" will meet these certifications requirements below:
- Firefighter II
- Fire Instructor I
- Fire Inspector II
- Hazardous Materials Technician
- Driver Operator Pumper
- National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or State EMT
- Drive Operator Aerial (Must be obtained within 18 months from start of position).
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:
- Fire Engineering
- Fire Suppression
- Preventative Maintenance
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent.
GS-08: Time in grade Requirement at 52 weeks (GS-07).
