The top salary range for this position currently reaches $100,571.80. The position will receive a 4.0% salary increase in July 2024 and 2025, a 3.0% salary increase in July 2026; bringing the top step salary to $112,041.79.

Under general supervision of the Deputy Fire Marshal, the Fire Protection Specialist performs a variety of fire and life safety inspections; review plans to determine compliance with fire and life safety codes; prepares inspection reports, technical information and statistical data; and performs other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Supervision is provided by the Deputy Fire Marshal or their designee.
Essential Job Functions
Essential job functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: (These functions may not be present in all positions in this classification. Duties include, but are not limited to the following: perform complex technical fire and life safety inspections, including residential, commercial and industrial buildings and places of public assemblage and review building construction plans to determine compliance with fire and life safety codes; provide a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, contractors, engineers/designers, and other city departments; evaluate Fire Protection systems; enforce fire safety code provisions; issue notices, warnings, and citations; maintain current inspection records; prepare inspection reports, technical information and statistical data; develop and participate in public education and outreach projects within the community; make presentations to community groups; assist and participate in educating the public at schools, regarding fire prevention, disaster preparedness and other related educational programs and services; attend a variety of continuing education classes, seminars, and meetings in an effort to maintain familiarity with applicable codes, regulations, policies, and procedures; investigate complaints pertaining to violation of fire prevention laws and gives correction orders as necessary; assist sworn fire safety personnel as needed with code interpretation and fire prevention inspections; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; participate in a variety of special projects related to fire inspection and prevention activities; will be required to respond to emergency calls after hours; accepts periodic overtime assignments. Maintain regular attendance.
Qualification Guidelines
To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities, and enable the individual to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position. A typical combination is:
Education and/or Experience:
Two years of experience in fire safety protection and/or plan review or other related inspection/plan review activities that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the duties of the position applied for is required. An Associate's degree in Fire Science or a related field from an accredited college or university is desirable.
Knowledge of:
Principles, systems, procedures, practices and methods of fire and life safety prevention and inspection; Uniform Fire and Building Codes, State and National Fire Codes, local ordinances and standards; laws and regulations governing operation of a fire agency; fire engineering principles and the systems and equipment used.
Ability to:
Make judgment decisions in the field; deal positively with people under negative conditions; effectively communicate on a UHF portable radio; and promote an understanding of ordinance requirements.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California Class "C" Driver's License is required.
Completion of: CFSTES (California Fire Service Training and Education System) Fire Prevention 1A, 1B, 1C OR Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C 1D, and HazMat First Responder Awareness required. Fire Prevention "2" Series or Fire Inspector "2" Series required within one year of appointment.
Desirable Certifications:CFSTES (California Fire Service Training and Education System) Fire Prevention 3A: Hydraulic Sprinkler Calculations, Fire Prevention 3B: Plan Checking; Plan Examiner 1A: Building Plan Review, Plan Examiner 1B: Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems Plan Review, Plan Examiner 1C: Hazards and Special Operations Plan Review, CA Statutes and Regulations (SFT FSTEP course), International Code Council Fire Inspector II.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds is required. Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, crouching, and stooping in the performance of daily office activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in retrieving and entering data using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading work related documents and using the computer, and acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Employee generally works indoors. Environment is generally clean with limited exposure to conditions such as dust, fumes, or odors. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but the employee may occasionally be exposed to loud talking and interruptions from telephones and/or members of the public.
SELECTION PROCESS:

Candidates will be required to pass a City administered pre-employment physical and may be required to pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination as part of the selection process. Candidates who do not pass will be disqualified and removed from the eligibility list.

Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive 2% @ 62 benefit formula underwhich the employee pays 7.75% as a contribution to the PEPRA plan. Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six-month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency will be enrolled in the 2.7% @ 55 benefit formula underwhich the employee pays 8% of the employee contribution to PERS. The City offers a Section 125 cafeteria benefit plan. The City does not participate in the Social Security System. City paid leave time (sick, vacation and holiday) available in accordance with City policies.
