Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm, unless otherwise notified. Must be able to respond to fire, life, safety, and security equipment system emergencies during regular business hours and off hours.


THE DEPARTMENT:

Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) serves as the lead organization for planning, developing, and maintaining the campus’ natural and built environments in support of the university’s mission. The department seeks to preserve and enhance CPP’s history, aesthetics, physical assets, and natural ecosystems through coordinated planning, design, and construction of buildings, roads, infrastructure, landscaping and other physical improvements. As an advocate on behalf of the university and its auxiliaries, FPM strives to provide facilities that meet scope, budget, operational needs and functional requirements. FPM is comprised of approximately 200 facilities professionals (FTE) that also provides maintenance services including custodial services, landscaping, recycling, building and mechanical trades, energy and utility management, fleet and auto services.

The workforce is culturally diverse and multilingual. Its composition includes full time staff throughout FPM who are also earning their degrees and many whom have graduated from Cal Poly Pomona. The staff includes licensed architects and engineers, accountants, planners, project managers, administrative staff, carpenters, plumbers, locksmiths, painters, electricians, landscape architects, computer technicians, custodians and other building and mechanical trade technicians.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under the general supervision of a Supervising Electrician, incumbent performs the full range of skilled-journey level electrical and related work and may provide instruction and lead unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.
  • Incumbent responds to campus Fire Alarms, maintains computer-based inspections, service, and preventative and routine maintenance records; maintains regular inspection schedules and documents all associated activities relating, but not limited to, Fire Alarm panels, sprinkler and smoke systems, fire pump and standpipe systems, restaurant fire suppression systems, as well as the elevator emergency call systems.
  • Incumbent inspects and provides preventative maintenance and repairs for fire, sprinkler, safety, and security systems; maintains databases for inspection and preventative maintenance records and daily service reports; responds to fire, life, safety emergencies involving systems and equipment.
  • Incumbent would also respond to service calls, install circuits for electrical equipment, assemble, install, replace and repair electrical equipment such as lights, motors, heaters, transformers and other apparatus. The incumbent will troubleshoot, and repair electrical equipment and apparatus using various test instruments, operate and maintain electrical power-generator plants and other electrical systems; maintain, test, and repair lowvoltage systems and elevator and access systems; test electrical equipment for safety and efficiency; plan the layout and wiring of new or remodeled installations; perform incidental soldering and welding as necessary to complete electrical work. Assist with coordination of Evacuation Drills as it pertains to the Fire Alarm systems; respond to campus emergencies.
  • Incumbent shall review and perform assigned work orders daily. In the performance of daily work, incumbent must document work performed, post material and labor hours used on work orders.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Applies knowledge of NFPA regulations, National Electric Code, OSHA requirements, general work safety procedures, and other applicable regulations while performing duties. Review plans for compliance with California State Fire Marshal and NFPA regulations.
  • Advise in the selection of electrical equipment; inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulation; inspect related work performed by contractors; estimate cost, time and materials for electrical projects; clean, maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid California Driver’s License and proof of insurance
  • These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard electrician’s apprenticeship program.
  • Work requires thorough knowledge of electrical theory and the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the electrical trade for the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical apparatuses, equipment and systems; and a thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal codes and regulations pertaining to the electrical trade, including the National Electric Code and Electrical Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California.
  • Must be able to assemble, install, maintain and repair electrical apparatuses; operate all applicable tools and equipment necessary to perform skilled electrical work; read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; make rough sketches; estimate the cost, time and materials of electrical work; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver’s License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.
  • The incumbent for this position will be required to provide medical clearance stating they are able to wear a respirator for (length of time) intermittent time frames for the purpose of (a) responding to emergencies and (b) when working in building with asbestos.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Two (2) to four (4) years of journeymen level experience maintaining and repairing low and medium voltage systems with specific experience on fire, smoke, and security alarm systems and/or equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in fire and security alarm systems, completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in fire and security systems maintenance and repair for one year of the required experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of NFPA regulations, National Electric Code, OSHA requirements, general work safety procedures, and other applicable regulations. Working knowledge of materials, methods, and tools required for installation, maintenance, and repair for various fire, smoke, and security systems and equipment.
  • Understanding of Unity, Edwards EST3, FCI-72, Notifier 640 & 3030, Simplex Grinell, Radionics, Siemens, and other comparable fire panel equipment. Knowledge of fire pumps and standpipe systems. Diagnostic methods to determine causes of electrical problems or failures as related to Fire, Life, and Safety systems. Knowledge of low voltage equipment installation and repair with cabling consisting of CAT5 or greater (data, telecom), CM, CMR, CL2R, CL3R, CMP, CL2P and CL3P (sound, alarm, security), FPL, FPLR, FPLP (Fire Alarm), thorough knowledge of smoke-containment systems (Won-doors, Smoke Guard, and/or comparable units). Appropriate safety precautions and procedures to work in a safe and efficient manner. Basic record-keeping techniques and practices.
  • Provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position.

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the Teamsters bargaining unit 6. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $6,151 and maximum $7,942 per month.
