Job Description of a Fiber Optic Technician:
The Fiber Optic Technician position assists in the planning and execution of Structured Cabling jobs to include those involving Fiber. This position is critical in helping to assure that projects are completed safely, on time and on budget with the highest quality and customer service.
Roles and Responsibilities of a Fiber Optic Technician:
- Perform all duties of an Apprentice and Installer
- Assist in building out telecommunications closets
- Install grounding infrastructure
- Perform copper cable terminations
- Perform and document copper cable testing
- Troubleshoot copper cable
- Perform retrofit (active circuits and cutover)
- Demonstrate basic understanding of Fiber Optic cable types and their properties
- Identify and know fiber connector types
- Know NEC Fiber Optic color code and identify color standards for Fiber Optic apparatus
- Strip inside and Outside Plant Fiber Optics cables including armored and prep for termination
- Terminate anaerobic and mechanical connectors
- Pull fiber in conduit and cable tray systems in accordance with best practices and industry standards
- Maintain current industry knowledge
- Maintain and demonstrate knowledge of network topologies
- Maintain and demonstrate knowledge of codes and standards
- Review blueprints or work orders to install, move, change, repair, or remove voice, data, video, and audio communications cables, copper and/or fiber
- Lead small projects or parts of a project as needed
- Perform housekeeping duties as required
- Assist with material loading and off-loading
- Drive on company business and assume responsibility of a company vehicle as needed and allowed
- Represent NCS with professionalism and integrity
- Perform all assigned duties Safely adhering to the highest Quality standards
- Provide the highest level of customer service with continuous communication (verbal and written)
- Perform all functions of the position and other duties that may be assigned
