Job description

The Department of Health Policy and Management in the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health seeks applications for a tenure-stream faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The Department embraces a broad view of the potential for health policy to advance social justice and improve the public's health. Our faculty engages in research and evaluation work in areas including Medicare and Medicaid policy, cancer Health Services, substance use and mental health, aging and long-term care, and women's and gender health. The successful applicant will be a Health Services or Policy Researcher or health economist who can sustain an extramurally funded research program, collaborate across departments and schools, and teach and mentor students in Health Services and Policy Research. We welcome and encourage applications from those who identify as members of groups that have been underrepresented in the health sciences.
Qualifications
Faculty members in the Department are expected to develop and lead independent research programs; collaborate as appropriate across the Schools of the Health Sciences; teach undergraduate or graduate courses in the Department; and mentor undergraduate, master's, or doctoral students. In addition, faculty are expected to participate in Departmental events such as regular research seminars and serve on Departmental, School, or University committees. A research-oriented doctoral degree with a focus on Health Services or Policy Research or health economics is required.
The successful applicant will demonstrate a commitment to innovative research, teaching and mentoring, and service in a diverse and inclusive environment. Preferred qualifications include:

  • Expertise leading innovative research using Health Services research methods focused on advancing public health and health policy.
  • A commitment to advance the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in public health.
  • A commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Enthusiasm for collaborative work to translate research findings to policy decisions.

Position Requirements at the Assistant Professor level include:
  • A track record of peer-reviewed publications in public health, health policy, or clinical journals appropriate to the career stage. For those currently completing doctoral studies, this includes research working papers or publications in process.
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Demonstrated potential for obtaining extramural research funding support.

Position requirements at the Associate Professor level include:
  • A track record of peer-reviewed publications in public health, health policy, or clinical journals appropriate to the career stage.
  • A track record of consistent extramural research funding support.
  • National recognition of research accomplishments by peers.
  • Experience in mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students and excellence in teaching.
  • Experience in appropriate university or departmental service (i.e., program leadership, committee chair, or membership).
  • Experience in service to the profession (e.g., service in national organizations, journal editorial boards, or grant review committees).

Environment
The University of Pittsburgh ranked seventh among Schools of Public Health in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding received in 2020. A member of the Association of Schools of Public Health, the School of Public Health (SPH) has over 600 students, 200 full-time faculty members, and more than 300 staff members, SPH is located in the heart of Pittsburgh's healthcare district and in close proximity to the University of Pittsburgh's other five health sciences schools and the main Pittsburgh campus. Housed within the SPH, the mission of the Department of Health Policy and Managementis to improve public health through better planning, design, management, and evaluation of the myriad organizations that provide Health Services. The core disciplines represented within the Department include health economics, human resource management, health policy, law, ethics, and organization studies applied to health care. Faculty are engaged in multidisciplinary research and scholarship addressing a range of problems relevant to health policy, Health Services delivery, outcome measurement, patient safety, leadership, and organization management relevant to healthcare organizations and systems. The department offers an accredited Master's in Health Administration, a Master's of Public Health, a Master's of Science in Health Services Research and Policy, and a Ph.D. in Health Services Research and Policy. The Department has funded research projects totaling more than $4.6 million. There are 18 primary faculty members and more than 100 students currently enrolled in various degree programs in the Department. Faculty lead or collaborate with research centers across the University, including the Medicaid Research Center, Center for Women's Health Research and Innovation, Hillman Cancer Center, Center for Bioethics and Health Law, Center for Research on HealthCare, and Center for Pharmaceutical Prescribing and Policy.
