Job description

 

Responsible for the supervision of personnel performing preventative and general maintenance related to electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC/refrigeration at the Columbus Zoological Park Association properties.


  • Directs and coordinates activities of Maintenance personnel engaged in the preventative and general maintenance, inspection and repair of all electrical distribution and lighting systems equipment, natural gas distribution systems and equipment, potable and non-potable water systems and equipment, storm and sanitary sewer systems, water and sewer treatment plants, buildings and facility mechanical systems, refrigeration equipment, painting and performing structural repairs to masonry, and marine exhibit life support systems and controls and exhibit areas.
  • Uses electronic work order system to review job orders, determines work priorities, and schedules those orders to effect greatest utilization of labor and materials.
  • Provides necessary follow-up with personnel to ensure that jobs have been successfully completed.
  • Ensures all department expenses are within budget through constant monitoring.
  • Plans, develops, and implements new methods and procedures designed to improve operations and minimize operating costs.
  • Develops and implements preventative maintenance programs based on the manufacturer’s requirements and best practices.
  • Inspects buildings, facilities, and equipment to determine need and extent of service. 
  • Prepares and conducts performance reviews, ensures safety and equipment training is available, and identifies development opportunities for staff, recommends corrective actions when appropriate and interviews/recommends candidates for hire and/or internal promotion or transfer.
  • Negotiates costs and project scopes with vendors.
  • Prepares schedules for work completion.
  • Conducts daily planning meetings with Maintenance personnel.
  • Attends daily/weekly meetings as required.
  • Participates in cross-training activities as directed.
  • Works with Purchasing to ensure that adequate supplies are always on hand using the most cost-effective methods available.
  • Manages department purchasing through electronic purchase order program.
  • Prepares necessary paperwork (e.g. purchase requisitions, check requests) for payment to outside contractors.
  • Maintains a cooperative working relationship with the other Facilities managers and supervisors to ensure the effective operation of the entire Facilities Department.
  • When applicable, monitors and distributes chemical supply products and follows standardized usage guidelines and safety information as set by the Material Data Sheets to Facilities.
  • Ensures the safety of self, staff, animals, and guests through regular participation in safety training and activities, compliance with standard operating procedures and proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization and avidly supports the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks.
  • Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical school graduate in related field preferred.
  • Undergraduate degree in related field (e.g. engineering, building management) preferred.
  • 5 years of general maintenance experience required.
  • 5 years of supervisory experience required.
  • Working knowledge of trades and building systems required.
  • Basic plumbing, welding, fabricating, carpentry, construction, and engineering skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of blueprints, weights, properties, conversion tables, surveying and mapping preferred.
  • Working knowledge of tools and equipment used in trades, maintenance and construction work required.
  • Knowledge of building materials and supplies required.
  • Ability to plan work schedules and to deal effectively with supervisors and subordinates required.
  • Experience with computers and Windows software preferred.
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays required.
  • Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner and without direct supervision required.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service by interacting with guests positively and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. standards required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Zoo team members and contacts regarding company business required.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required.
  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter required.
  • Possession of a valid state issued motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record required.
  • Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s drug-free workplace policy including but not limited to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and follow-up treatment required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.
