Job description

The Expense Accounting Sr. Analyst is responsible for assisting with the execution of Securian's expense allocation processes and related reporting, managing allocations in both SAP / PAPM and Apptio systems. This position combines in-depth analysis, critical thinking, and technical expertise to manage expense allocations through both budget and quarterly financial reporting requirements.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for assisting with the ongoing management of Securian's expense allocation framework for both Actuals and Budget, involving both SAP PAPM and Apptio systems, and managing data feeds between both systems.
  • Responsible for expense allocation results reporting, to facilitate expense transparency between budget owners and finance teams in product areas.
  • Manage and communicate detailed allocation methodology, ensuring cost center owners understand and review allocation methods, and finance teams understand resulting expense allocations.
  • Supporting the establishment of a cross-functional team as a communication and input forum for Expense Allocation topics. Partner with FP&A professionals across the company to develop appropriate allocations for various cost centers and divisions.
  • Identify and implement process efficiencies and to bring transparency to Securian's allocation methodology processes and results.
  • Develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge of budget functionality, expense data, processes and serve as a consultant on expense allocation topics.
  • Monitor industry practices and related to expense management, budgeting, and allocation topics. Consultant should pro-actively research industry practices and stay current with budgeting and allocation topics.
  • Scope of responsibilities may expand beyond primary area of focus as the Expense Accounting Team evolves.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree (concentration in Finance and/or Accounting)
  • Demonstrated financial data analysis and problem-solving skills to effectively research, analyze, and respond to expense questions.
  • Prior experience working, implementing and reporting on allocations, preferably in either PAPM or Apptio systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in order to interact with all levels of management.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure.
  • Ability to deal with confidential information and situations.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to make effective presentations to a variety of audiences.
  • Advanced experience with MS Excel and various MI tools.
  • Accounting Knowledge. This position should have an adequate level of accounting knowledge (assumed with completion of a four-year degree with either a major or minor in accounting, finance or business administration).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Insurance industry experience
  • Professional work experience in Accounting and/or Finance
  • Apptio or PAPM system experience.
