CEO Position Summary

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) assumes a pivotal role in the administration and management of Camp Korey. This leadership position is directly accountable to the Board of Directors and steers the organization towards the fulfillment of its mission, vision, annual objectives, and strategic plan. The CEO exercises oversight and conducts evaluations across various domains, including programs, personnel, facilities, fiscal integrity, fundraising, and external relations.

 

Collaborating closely with the President of the Board, Board Officers, and Members, the CEO facilitates the realization of organizational goals and the effective implementation of policies established by the Board. As the primary spokesperson, the CEO serves as a dynamic advocate for the organization, infusing energy and enthusiasm into the mission. Possessing adept people skills, the CEO fosters strong relationships with the dedicated and compassionate staff, volunteers, and supporters.

 

In addition to these responsibilities, the CEO takes a proactive approach in human resource management by supervising, hiring, evaluating, and motivating staff. The CEO supports and nurtures the team's efforts, working in tandem with the Director of Finance to ensure that budgets, systems, and controls align with the organization's needs. This multifaceted role underscores the CEO's commitment to fostering a thriving and effective organizational environment at Camp Korey.

 


CEO Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Management
    • Champion and uphold the organization’s mission, articulate a compelling vision, and ensure alignment between decisions and core values.
    • Continuously evaluate program effectiveness to maintain programmatic excellence.
    • Recruit, lead, and nurture a high-performance senior management team.
    • Foster a culture of inquiry, mutual respect, and constructive debate, cultivating sound decision-making.
    • Assume a pivotal role in crisis management and communications.
  • Governance
    • Support the Board of Directors in fulfilling its governance function by serving as a valuable resource to committee chairs and facilitating the work of Board Committees.
    • Serve on all Board committees and designate staff to support their work.
    • Provide essential staff support to the Executive Committee and committee chairs including agendas, supporting documents, and all Board materials.
    • Streamline Board processes by offering support in governance documents, policies, bylaws, and committee charters.
    • Facilitate seamless onboarding for new board members.
  • Strategic Planning
    • Offer valuable support to the Board during the initiation of the strategic planning process.
    • Oversee the development and implementation of the strategic plan.
    • Guide the approval process for capital projects, equipment acquisitions, and new initiatives.
  • Administration and Human Resources
    • Thoroughly review and authorize all agreements, contracts, and legal instruments.
    • Collaborate effectively with legal counsel to address business affairs and risk management.
    • Ensure compliance with external regulations, 501(c)3 requirements, and nonprofit standards.
    • Implement human resource functions in line with approved personnel policies, fostering professional growth and development.
    • Establish and oversee a robust process for performance assessment and evaluation.
  • Financial Performance
    • Assume accountability for the fiscal management and sustainability of Camp Korey, adhering to the approved budget, ensuring appropriate resource utilization, and maintaining a positive financial position.
    • Collaborate closely with the Director of Finance to establish and monitor internal controls, monitoring accepted accounting practices to effectively manage resources as directed by the Board following current laws and regulations.
    • In conjunction with the Director of Finance develop and recommend an annual budget (Operating and Capital) for approval by the Finance Committee and Board.
    • Provide recommendations to the Finance Committee regarding financial institutions and signatory changes.
    • Ensure a rigorous process is in place for the completion of an independent annual audit.
  • Communications
    • Serve as the articulate representative of Camp Korey, addressing constituents, media, and the public positively and compellingly.
    • Function as the primary spokesperson during crisis communications along with the Director of Camp Experience and Director of Communications
    • Serve as a resource to the Director of Communications and Communications Committee to ensure communications, public relations, and marketing initiatives align seamlessly with the organization's mission and strategic direction.


 

  • Advancement
    • Serve as a Resource with the Director of Development to craft a comprehensive annual fundraising plan including capital campaign strategies.
    • Collaborate with the Director of Development, Advancement Team, Development Committee, and Board to identify and explore new opportunities for revenue generation.
    • Engage with the Director of Development, Advancement Team, and Board members in cultivating relationships with prospective donors.
    • Maintain a dedicated portfolio of major donors, nurturing long-term relationships to secure continued support.

 

Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in nonprofit leadership.
  • Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, social work, or a related field (master’s degree preferred).
  • Strong preference for previous professional experience within the SeriousFun Children’s Network or camps focused on serving children.

 

Required Knowledge, Skill, and Ability

  • Exhibit excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written and oral communication skills.
  • The ability to establish positive relationships within multicultural environments.
  • Demonstrate a proven history of fundraising success.
  • Possess the capability to lead complex organizations reporting to multiple constituencies.
  • Display a robust financial background.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.

 

Work Environment: 

Work is primarily performed in office environments routinely using standard office equipment, computers, and phones.  Working outside will sometimes be necessary, in various weather conditions.    

The Camp Korey workspace is a busy shared office environment, with multiple people coming in and out and various distractions.  The ability to remain focused and thrive in this type of environment is a key to success.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak, talk, and hear, and is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms, balance, stoop, and bend; lift, carry, move, push and pull up to 25 lbs.  Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.  

 

Position type/Expected hours of work: 

This is a full-time position. Standard days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5pm.  However, the position requires the ability to work during non-standard hours and on short notice as the need arises.  This position is not subject to the Fair Labor and Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay. 

   

Travel: 

Local travel will be required, primarily during the day, and mostly in and around Skagit County.  Limited out-of-area or overnight travel may be required.  The Camp Korey camp office is not easily accessible by public transportation.
