We are seeking an experienced EV Education Lab Technician to support our growing focus on sustainable transportation technologies. The ideal candidate will be deeply versed in the electrical, mechanical, and thermal management systems of EVs and will play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of automotive engineers.
Job Summary:
The EV Education Lab Technician will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining test benches for a range of electric vehicle components including heat pumps, radiators, compressors, motors, inverters, power electronics (DC/DC Converter and AC/DC charger) and Li-ion battery pack and modules. In addition to the fabrication of the physical infrastructure, the technician will support the data acquisition and control including the instrumentation of components with temperature, pressure, voltage, and current sensors to interface. This role will provide essential support for educational programs, research projects, and the development of instructional materials.

Responsibilities*
Duties include:
50% Laboratory bench design, development, set-up and validation testing
25% Development standard operating procedures (SOP) and lab safety standards
15% Technical support, guidance, and troubleshooting of electrical equipment
10% Organization, maintenance, and inventory of lab space and equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
Construct and maintain test benches for the evaluation and testing of EV components such as heat pumps, electric motors, power electronics, and battery modules/packs.
Ensure the test benches are equipped with proper tools, sensors for instrumentation (e.g. thermocouples), and data acquisition systems (e.g. Labview) for comprehensive analyses.
Develop and document standard operating procedures for test bench operation, and component testing.
Coordinate with instructional faculty and staff to develop educational modules and hands-on laboratory exercises for students.
Assist with the implementation of safety protocols and ensure adherence to all safety regulations within the lab environment.
Provide technical support and guidance to students and faculty during laboratory sessions.
Troubleshoot and repair EV components and test equipment as necessary.
Collaborate with the engineering faculty to identify novel research opportunities and technological advancements in the field of electric vehicles.
Manage inventory of lab equipment and supplies, including ordering and restocking as required. Must be able to move and transport equipment up to 30 lbs.
Stay current with industry standards and advancements in EV technology, test equipment, and educational methodologies.
Required Qualifications*
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Automotive Technology, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in building and operating test benches for automotive components.
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems, wiring, instrumentation, and data acquisition.
  • Technical proficiency with EV components including motors, batteries, and thermal management systems.
  • Familiarity with educational tools and practices or a willingness to learn and support educational initiatives.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students and faculty members.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Experience in an educational laboratory setting.
  • Proficiency in use of CAD software for the design of test fixtures, component mounting, and mechanical coupling adapters .
  • Certification in electrical safety and/or experience with high-voltage systems.
  • Experience with Low Voltage control system wiring.
  • Pipe Fitting and automotive thermal fluids
  • Testing and diagnostics of automotive HVAC systems
  • Voltage, temperature, current, pressure sensor instrumentation.

Additional Information
Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
This role involves working in a laboratory setting which may include exposure to noise, dust, and potentially hazardous materials. Safety protocols must be followed at all times.
Must be able to move and transport equipment up to 30 lbs.
Salary:
A higher salary may be considered for an extraordinarily qualified candidate.
